If Vitters could play plus defense at a premium position he'd have been a much, much better prospect.

Here comes Kyle with his "everyone overrates everybody's minor league defense (except for certain guys)" anecdote

And if Almora had Vitters' power, he'd be a much better prospect. But he doesn't.

And yeah, Almora's defense is almost certainly being overrated. Every minor leaguer's is.

I am generally not somebody who just assumes a prospect will be good until he fails. I like to see a prospect do well before giving him credit for being good. And the Vitters commentary was as much about the inability to stay on the field as it was about being a completely underwhelming bat.

And what Almora had done in the minors until the last few weeks did not qualify as doing well?

It hasn't impressed me.

Proof that every minor leaguer's defense is overrated?

Proof that all these great fielders are actually great?

I'll take the fact that people who know things say it is over Kyle's made up anecdote based on like 5 guys or something.

A lifetime of experience reading breathless reports on "This guy could be a plus-plus defender right now even though he's still in A-ball" and then he comes up and gacks balls all over the place.

He's probably basing it on gimpy armed Olt and something he read about Dave Sappelt.

Ah, ok. Point for you.

That is pretty much how the baseball world worked, and failed, for decades before smart people supposedly figured out better ways to do things.

If there were better information at our disposal, I'd go with that. Kyle's opinion does not qualify, however.

Kyle's running out of legit arguments to start, so now he's just starting [expletive] stupid ones. Sorry Kyle, do you get paid to write about prospects? Do you know a bunch of scouts? Are you a scout? No? Guess what then? Me and everyone else will continue to laugh at you and listen to them.

The age old "Scouts vs. some vague thing Kyle started saying" debate.

You'll just pick out whichever of all those writers says the best thing, and then repeat it endlessly until it seems like consensus.

Who was talking about Almora's defense anyway? You can take the "Almora the flyball whisperer" rhetoric as hyperbole and he can still be a defensive asset.

No, the "people who have seen him play a weekend series say it is so" and "I read a vague quote about it 2 years ago and assume both that it was accurate and that it is still true".

All of those people have an agenda to push, including Kyle.

I kind of brought it up when goony compared Almora to Vitters...and I knew what Kyle's response would be so I kind of brought that up too.

But Kyle isn't basing his argument off anything. He's just decided that he doesn't want Almora's defense to be good, so he's making that declaration. Even "saw him play a weekend series" is more valid than whatever Kyle is doing.

He is basing it off of what he has perceived to be countless stories of amazing minor league fielders not holding up. I think it is similar to how every new hitting/pitching coach is some genius who will make everybody better and how every 55 year old "lifer" is a great baseball man that will bring a reservoir of knowledge that is somehow differentiated from everybody else.

You did a very nice job of preemptively turning this into an argument about me. Nice deflective tactic, and it workd.

Kyle and Goony look at minor leaguers, look at the lack of major league success at the moment, and basically have decided that projection is evil. To fit their attempt at hating on everything Cub-related. Both certainly know much more than anyone else ever involved in the game of baseball. Please Theo, take THEIR advice and no one else's. Your perceived success in the game pails in comparison to their ultimate wisdom of knowing everything.
