So the A's had their first rainout since 1998 while the Cubs and Pirates didn't play on a gorgeous 80 degree day in Pittsburgh while the next 2 days look dreadful. Way to go, MLB!

Yeah they totally should've seen this coming months ago wtf!?

No, it's just dumb to schedule an off day the 2nd day of the season instead of playing the 3 games and then scheduling the day off. It gives you more options to get all 3 games in.

Way too much sense...

Any one think of a reason why Wood isn't starting game 2?

He's starting the home opener

That and some said they see Philadelphia as a better use of a lefty.

As a side note, ***Jackson has done a better job of keeping the Pirates quiet.

Looks to me like Jackson has done a better job, not that those stats mean a whole hell of a lot.

Would it be that hard to do a floating day off? It seems like there could be a Monday-Thursday series. 3 games. Monday always opening day. Then the off day is based on the weather. If good weather, then off day Thursday after the series. Can forecast pretty accurately 7-10 days out. Set the schedule then. Especially with a night game. It's not like you have to worry about fans taking the day off work. Plus, the fans would have a week to change plans or sell tickets or whatever.

That seems like a pretty large inconvenience for the fans just to ensure there's no fluky rainout on Wednesday or Thursday.

I don't think a floating day off is all that feasible.

What does some more realistic to me is that you just price in the risk of the rainout and the potential good fortune of buying a Game 2 ticket that turns into an Opening Day ticket when setting pricing. It's silly to me that the main justification for the off day is that people pay more for that ticket, as if they don't control what the tickets cost too.

that would make more sense but people would complain about that too because most people don't understand maths

Would they complain? The only negative effect you're talking about is marginally increasing the Game 2 price. If it comes with the knowledge that there's no off day after Opening Day I doubt you'll see much uproar. It's not as if Game 2 has intrinsic value where people need to buy tickets for only that game and are therefore stuck paying the increase or else. There's 79 other games, including one the very next day.

Yeah, I don't think it could work, and I really don't think it needs to. They spend 6 months playing games on the vast majority of days. A week from now we aren't going to be thinking of the off day. As to "pricing in the risk" for the game 2, I do not see how that would work, since the two things working against each other is nobody cares about going to game 2 and sales are always much lower for that game, so increasing the price of those tix for the off chance that it will turn into the new Opening Day doesn't make much sense.

Well for that all that changes is the substance of the complaint. Lower ticket prices 50% and there's still going to be "$20 for a ticket and $6 more in fees, what a rip-off". People who would actually care and not just complaining to hear their own voice(which would happen regardless) would either understand or just pick another game. Again, there's nothing special about Game 2.

If I'm reading Fangraphs correctly, lefties hit 302/425/419 against Morton last year in 230 PAs.
