I wonder if Olt had a 21 PA stretch of 1.095 OPS all year last year (he probably did in that mini hot streak right before the trade after manny was getting credit for giving him pointers - but i just wanted to say that)

From 6-16 to 6-19 at AAA Round Rock, he went 6-for-17 with 2 2b, 3 HR, 2 BB for a slash line of 353/421/1.000 1.421 OPS.

Nope, not 21 PA. [-(

Not going to go back and look, but presuming he went 0-for-2 in the adjoining PAs, that gives him a 315/381/895 line for a 1.376 OPS for 21 PAs.

I don't think I will ever follow the minor leagues again if Baez doesn't at least turn into a solid player. He just looks too awesome and bust proof to fail.

Outside of death or debilitating injury, the absolute floor has to be like Pedro Alvarez.

So how are we feeling, overall, about Olt's chances to open with the team at this point, assuming he manages to get on the field and play 3B?

50/50. They're giving him every opportunity and then some. Needs to slow down the swing-and-miss, especially against righties.

I bought in a long time ago that he was fixable, but unless he starts getting reps at 3B very soon, I think he'll begin at Iowa. But if so, I could see him up before May.

If he gets reps in within a week though, I think he's got a great shot to be our Opening Day 3B. Leading to a Barney trade or a Murphy DFA.

I think it comes down to his bat and whether he can play 3B at all. I'm not sure how many reps he ends up with at 3B will matter all that much, as long as it's some and it's not like one game or having complications with it or something.

Relevant tweet from Arguello:

Hearing that if Olt can make the throws from 3B, he's going to get the job.

Since it's just a matter of showing his shoulder is okay, I don't think he needs weeks worth of reps at 3B. He's a plus defender just getting healthy after a knock(and is already hitting and playing 1B), it's not something he needs to build up a tolerance for.

I was on the Olt bandwagon the minute we traded for him. I called him the prime piece in the Garza trade. Now I had to be convinced it was Edwards and I changed my mind and agreed with that assessment. But I still felt Olt was more than just a guy that couldn't see any more. Really excited to think of him as our starting 3B. Our core gets much larger starting this year.

If Mike Olt can see and hit, then they may to have to do some scrambling to successfully tank this season.

I would be ok with Olt succeeding, Javy being called up in the summer, and having to settle for a 15-20 draft pick in 2015. Would rather get this ball rolling and have the ML team be exciting for once.

Yes, I think most here would be OK with "settling" for a 15-20 pick, assuming there's not some crazy situation somehow separating 10 from 15 by 3 games or something.

Kyle was being tongue in cheek.

Meanwhile, in Brewers camp, Garza has given up 12 ER in 5.2 innings on 19 hits.

Two small things that have happened in ST that I like:

1) We're still pretty healthy as far as Opening Day projection goes

2) Bonifacio solves the infield depth problem that I wasn't happy with.

If we stipulate that Olt is back to 2012 levels and Baez is up by June 1, then I'd project 78 wins without a firesale.

As crappy as this team is, it's nice to at least not have a horrific bench guy somewhere that we have to watch.

Granted, we still have to watch Barney take AB's, but hopefully that long nightmare will soon be over.

Well, the outfield has some horrorshow potential. We still don't know who the fifth outfielder is, and Lake has the potential to be the horrific bench guy except starting.

If we'd signed like one good outfielder this offseason, we'd be a .500 team.

If Olt is at 3rd, are we really going to see Barney play much? Bonifacio and Valbuena would be preferable to me, unless you're suggesting he gets PT to showcase him for trade.

It'd be nice but I have a feeling they see Barney as the starter at 2B either way and that his defense is that valuable (and that he isn't quite as bad at hitting as he was last year).

Yeah...I was gonna say Lake but I just don't want to quite be Lillibridge down on him yet.

If we're all wrong about Lake and he has a great year, fine. But if this team had the balls to say "Thanks for your hot streak last year, but we don't think you're one of our five best outfielders to go north with" I would be insanely impressed.
