I probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but couldn't losing weight help him increase his bat-speed/power?

You would think, but it seems like players in the past who were notorious for being fat or heavy and had a lot of power, who then went on to lose weight and get in better shape before a season, would often have lower power numbers.

But then again I'm only really recalling Prince Fielder when he took on that vegetarian diet after his 2007 breakout year, lost weight, and then lost over 100 points to his SLG and OPS, so I really don't have a lot of frame of reference.

There haven't been a lot of "fat" power hitters out there. Off the top of my head I can only think of David Ortiz, Mo Vaughn, Cecil Fielder... and I'm drawing a blank now.

Babe Ruth

Rusty Freaking Staub and Greg Luzinski were the fat power hitters I remember from my childhood.

Absolutely. Really depends how you do it - given his age and what I read about his offseason, I would be surprised if he lost any power. The fat doesn't produce power.

Do you have any examples of people who have actually lost significant weight and seen a noticeable power decrease?

John Kruk is someone I remember from the 80s.

Kruk wasn't really much of a power hitter.

Medicine has progressed to the point the he should really not lose anything but the weight. However, his power has yet to translate to games. So...

He displayed a good amount of power, hitting 21 doubles and 17 home runs in 61 games between rookie ball and low A in 2012. His power took a bit of a dive last year, but I don't think it's fair to say it has yet to translate to games.

Only one I know off the top of my head was the Fielder situation, mostly because it became a topic of conversation throughout the season when he stopped hitting home runs with the frequency he had hit them the year before (when he had 50). There were a lot of "Should Prince fielder start eating meat again?" articles, IIRC, which is kind of hilarious.

More moneyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

Cubs spring facility to be named Under Armour Performance Center under multi-year naming rights agreement. Stadium remains Cubs Park.

That has to be worth a middle reliever.

I'm more concerned that both catchers are on the same team

Apparently our offense is so bad they're giving us 4-out innings in the scrimmage to make it fair.

(not really, just for pitch count purposes)

From my work, I've come to know that they're still in negotiations to rename the spring training Stadium as well as the "plaza" outside of the renovated Wrigley on the triangle property. They're packaging the two together. Numbers as of now are extremely high, so no one has been able to come to an agreement, including several Fortune 100 companies.

Even though terms like this are always relative and this is subjective, I like to hear this.

For perspective, the numbers I've heard are similar to full stadium naming rights that other teams have gotten for their primary stadium.

We're going to be hearing a whole lot of "Wrigley Field at Corporate Plaza," I imagine. And cool for them. We need enough revenue to paper over Ricketts' incompetence and Epstein's indifference.
