There's no logic to getting rid of the PAT. What's next, let's give a TD to teams that get 1st and 1 because it's almost automatic they score a TD in 4 downs.

I agree, I think it's ridiculous.

I wonder if it is somehow motivated by a desire to reduce the money paid to kickers and long snappers. This year it appears the typical team attempted 41 or 42 XP and 30 or 31 FG. Obviously the emphasis is on the FG when it comes to hiring those guys, but if you have 40 less long snaps every year, and 40 less kicks, are teams going to emphasize their special teams specialists a little less?

Wait why don't we just move back the PAT and make it like, a 35 yard attempt?

And the kick block team can bring on a 12th player, but it has to be a Polar Bear. Brought to you by Coca Cola.

I do like the idea of PATs being made slightly more difficult. Put it on the 15 and snap from there.

Does the two point still start from the 2 and a half? Can you fake it from the 15? Is that one or two?

I think you need to put the 2 point try closer, whether it remains where it is currently or not can be up for debate.

A fake from the 15 would have to be a 2.

Making the extra point automatic wouldn't really change much. It would make games 5-10 minutes shorter and give some injury benefit at the loss of a few plays per year. I think the benefits outweigh the costs, but it's not exactly a big deal.

Moving the extra point back would definitely change the game though. It would start to tip the balance on two point conversions for some of the better offensive teams and potentially cause quite a few more two point tries. I've seen some fans propose this as a less radical idea, but while it's certainly a worthy idea it would definitely change things more than automating it would.

I think they should make a conversion attempt mandatory for 1 or 2 points. Maybe 1 point from the 2 like it is now and the 2 pointer from the 5 or 7 yard line would make sense.

can't remember who originally had this idea, but what about simply narrowing the goal posts? kickers now are too good, and narrowing the goal posts might make the game more interesting.

And square it off at the top (well, rectangle it off).

ESPN.com reports: Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi, grandson of Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, will be named Lions offensive coordinator, league sources said.

Lombardi has been Saints quarterbacks coach since 2009 and has helped direct New Orleans' high-powered offense

Kick extra points from the 15 yard line, and put a color grid between the posts. You hit the outside color, one point. Middle color, 2 points. Inside color, 3 points. TD's are only worth five points.

That's a really good hire by Detroit. Carmichael has gotten way too much credit, but Lombardi is a great coach.

I've always thought that PATs should be a little more like the Assault event

I wouldn't mind keeping the rules as they are now for PAT's, but for the 2 PT conversion you have the choice to go from the 2 like it is now with you offense or kick a FG from a distance say 60 yards to also get 2 points (go off of historical data on what FG distance roughly has the same conversion % as the 2 PT conversion now).

Add 4 point field goals like the 3 point line in the NBA too.

Didn't a pseudo football league try this? Was it the UFL or Arena?

Holy crap do the Browns make me feel better about my sports teams/life decisions in general. Do you guys think there are actual Jimmy Haslam apologists out there?

Also, Fun Fact: Haslam's family also owns the Tennessee Smokies.

Strange thing about this mess in Cleveland is that Jimmy Haslam's dad is a major booster at Tennessee and is mostly hands off and patient - completely the opposite of the Cleveland mess going on.

I hear Haslam's name brought up a lot but is Michael Lombardi just some sort of figure head? I thought the deal was he was named GM after Chud was hired, which ultimately led to Chud not being a match with the new regime.

I don't think Lombardi is just a figurehead and you're probably right that he wanted his own guy in there rather than somebody hired prior to his arrival. That's part of the problem, though - I've never liked the idea of hiring a head coach before a GM for this reason. Haslam and Banner made the move before Lombardi came in, now he wants his own guy and they're embarrassed because they fired a guy after one year.

That said, I don't think the search itself has been that bad. I don't know that Pettine or Quinn will be good head coaches, but it's not like they're ridiculous options. Quinn would likely be a head coach right now if it Seattle had lost earlier. The negativity about the search comes from guys turning them down and that comes from a concern that Haslam is too hands on and reactionary.
