I think those are all predominately 3-4 DCs too. I don't know much about Moss. I know he played in 3-4 most of his career. Butler and Horton are from the Steeler family. Butler is really intriguing. I believe the Steelers are holding the job for him whenever LeBeau retires, but that's probably never going to happen at this point. Not sure how close you guys are to being able to pull off a 3-4.

My guess is we're going to a 3-4, especially after what sneaky said. We'll need some personnel changes to make a 3-4 work, but I think it's doable. No nosetackle, but LBs like Ayers and McCarthy can probably play in a 3-4 and we still have Kamerion Wimbley who can move back to OLB (if we don't cut him).

Local guys don't think Butler is realistic, but I'd love to dig into the LeBeau-led Pitt defensive family with him or Horton. Moss is Green Bay's LB coach and has been discussed as a rising defensive coordinator prospect. Wouldn't mind a Capers protege either. I do like that Whiz seems to be looking at aggressive defenses for coordinators, we've been too passive for too long.

Sammie Hill should be a really good fit at NT, though

pretty uninspiring, but he's evidently also not an insurmountable obstacle to winning, so that's cool i guess

Since Stafford is one of the best QBs of all time, just like Manning, you shouldn't have to worry.

He's much better than Flacco.

at least the OC hire provides excitement the HC hire didn't

He’s worked for the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks, runs a pro-style attack and just seems to have that analytical, football-as-chess NFL approach

I love the Caldwell hire, from a Bears standpoint. I'm assuming he'll be calling the plays.

Completely forgot about him when I typed that. Doesn't sound like it's going to be a strict 3-4 anyway.

Not overly impressed with the Lions' or Vikings' hires. I like them both from a Bears' perspective.

Nah, Zimmer is a good hire. 2nd best of the offseason, IMO, behind Bradley in Houston. I'll take proven coordinator or college coach getting promotions to HC over retread head coaches who have never won anything.

I just think hiring a defensive-minded coach when your offense is a mess with no QB was a mistake.

Not really, depends on his offensive coordinator. And he has a huge coaching tree as he's been a long-time DC for several organizations. I'm thinking he'll be able to find someone pretty decent.

As bad as they were on offense, Minnesota was worse on defense.

and he picks Miami...it looks like this was something Ed Werder mostly just made up and ran with

The defense was a far greater mess. One of the few worst in the league depending on how you evaluate it. The offense has some talent (Peterson, Jennings, Patterson, Rudolph, solid line) but obviously needs a QB.

Whoever the future QB is, he's not on the roster now. I'm not convinced that there's a big difference in developing that guy with an offensive minded head coach rather than just getting a good coordinator and QB coach. Childress/Bevell and Kevin Rogers were supposed to be great QB minds but it didn't matter when Tarvaris was the guy. Then of course you can look at Belichick and others for the opposite.

I love the hire. I was pretty indifferent on almost all of the coordinator possibilities other than him. It's somewhat remarkable to me how much his current and former players all love him and swear by him given his style. I think he's a hell of a coach and should be a good leader. I also like that he has a varied defensive background which is crucial in today's NFL compared to Frazier who was fairly rigid to his core philosophy.

As always, it will come down to finding a QB.

They're bringing in Norv Turner for an interview which I'd like a lot. Zimmer has the type of personality/command that would be able to keep him from getting too cute I think.
