Sounds like a kid with serious character issues.

He beat his girlfriend last offseason. Not a big fan of the Carey pick because he's pretty slow (though he does everything else well).

Love Vereen.

Didn't have time to post this, but I also like the Carey pick. Fantastic at hitting holes, overshadows his lack of speed.

Probably would have taken Desir instead, but oh well. No way I'd have taken Storm Johnson though.

RT @ChicagoBears: Bears acquire pick 131 and a 7th rounder (#246) in trade with Broncos. Broncos receive Bears 5th rounder in 2014 & 2015.

Ugh, stupid need obsession ignoring value.

To grab a guy that appears to have fallen? I'm not fretting over a 5th next year. You can always recoup that pick.

Not when you've shown zero ability to judge value of draft picks. Good teams trade down and stockpile.

Green Bay doing well in this draft, as usual

Thornton was a bigger reach than Ferguson. Other than that, yeah they're doing alright.

Packers have drafted only Bahktiari, Cobb, Lacy and Hayward as guys that have contributed well in the last 3 drafts.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the Packers have a reputation for drafting well. Just because they have a lot of guys they drafted on the roster doesn't mean they're actually good.

Because they won the draft with the Rodgers pick, surely that must have been a Jedi mind trick

Trading down doesn't make you good. Cleveland trades down a lot. Picking good players makes you good.

Now, you can't consistently lose picks either like 2nd rounders for Gaines Adams, but trading down isn't good as some rule of thumb, it's all circumstantial.

Don't really like the Carey pick - they probably could have kept their picks and just taken Vereen there. I doubt Carey will provide value over a similar pick later in the draft or UDFA

I think I would have just taken Vereen and taken a chance on Carey dropping.

The only reason to stockpile is to eventually package picks to go get a guy you really want. You can't have 8-10 draft picks a year making your roster anyway.

Sure, we paid up a bit. But it was to go grab a guy we wanted/needed. Re-acquiring a 5th next year, if we want to do so, isn't hard to accomplish.

By the way, I would have preferred just taking Vereen in the 4th. I've got no issue with taking a backup to Forte, but Vereen seems like the more important need.

So, from that standpoint, I guess I change my opinion. We did overpay. But I'm still of the mind a 5th isn't hard to acquire.

couldn't it be argued that if they thought carey was the BPA, then making this trade to fulfill a need with a guy who had dropped was an indirect result of going bpa?

Plus, not that I am really arguing one way or the other on this as I just got home to see what happened... but isn't this draft much deeper than usual? Even to the point that the UDFA's are going to be good this year. So trading a 5th round pick in next year's draft and getting a 7th this year might not be as much of a drop off as it usually is.

Yes, we don't know what their board looks like but if they're drafting for need, they wouldn't pick a backup RB over a S.

I just can't see that, not with an RB being the BPA target. And an RB who doesn't have any kind of special measurable, and has character issues

Edit: whoops, I meant this to be a response to David, sorry

One of my favorite annual traditions is your complaining in the Bears draft thread. Remember how much you hated the Alshon pick and just called him fat over and over? That was fun.

So you think it was a need based pick?

I'm not in love with taking an RB but I certainly don't think they're incompetent enough to reach on a guy to fill backup RB.

I don't know, I'm sure Emery knows a lot more than I do, but what sticks out about Carey that you can't get after the draft?

He seems like the kind of back the Packers pick up off the street every year when their RBs go down. I'm just not seeing it.

You know, this new draft schedule blows. I feel like I'm able to be more engaged for Saturday -- except now all the real action is over. I know it's not going to go back, but I for one don't like it.
