I think it's a well deserved reputation in the sense that he certainly seems to value athleticism, but not in an Al Davis "just take the best 40 time" kind of way. And it also really depends on the position. WR for instance, size and body control seem much more important than the combine type athletic traits. For edge rushers there seems to be a high importance on the combine type traits and for interior defenders it's more of a size/speed balance. Although even these traits are still based on a fairly small sample.

In describing Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman, his coaching peers often discuss an unconventional approach. But Syracuse offensive coordinator George McDonald took it a step further in calling Trestman “kind of the Phil Jackson of the NFL in terms of how he sees the game from a different picture other than just football and Xs and Os.”

Still can't believe they didn't fire Tucker. Still so worried about the defense getting the lowest possible production from potential talent, rather than the opposite.

I'm convinced he's a clown and I'm desperate to be proven wrong. Because if not, it's another 8-8 season maybe 9-7. At some point you've got to be able to stop someone in the 4th quarter.

You're convinced Tucker is a clown based on the poor play of a defense that at times had to start Landon Cohen, Shea McClellin at DE, Khaseem Greene, Zack Bowman, Isaiah Frey (nickel), Chris Conte and Major Wright?

No. I'm convinced he's a clown in spite of that. No imagination, didn't get really any player to outperform.

Why would you put Conte and Wright on that list, by the way? Those guys had their most catastrophic seasons under Tucker. It's not all because of the DLine. Maybe some or even most, but regardless -- their careers likely ended under this guy.

He is a clown. But he's less of one when he has a full slate of healthy players. I think there's a good chance the DT play could be similar to last year. The LB play probably isn't going to be any better either, as DJ will get hurt again, Bostic should improve some, but not enough. And Shea has never played the position. Safety maybe a little better tackling with Mundy vs. Wright, but I doubt FS is going to be any better with Conte or a mid-round rookie starting.

But I think improving on Wootton with Houston and getting more consistency from Allen than they did from Peppers, and being better at CB (whether healthy Tillman or better w/Fuller at nickel) will be enough to make the team a non-disaster defensively. And oddly, as much as the offense scored last year, they never really got up early on teams to make them stop running, other than Dallas. So, at some point the offense improving is going to make the defense better by default, because teams are going to be 1-dimensional.

I'm just looking for a defense that can be in the high 20s. 22nd ranked is the goal I have set for the D this year. Not lofty at all.

I don't know that Tucker is a clown based on what we saw last year. Our d-linemen were barely roster-level players and were on roller skates most of the season. I'm not sure that is his fault.

There's plenty of data supporting Tucker is a clown (figuratively speaking). This isn't his first unsuccessful DC job.

Yes, there's a history.

I'm definitely not saying he had much to work with, once Melton went down and then Briggs too. It was going to suck. But the Epic fail, the collapse of historic proportions -- some of that has to come back on him, too.

Mostly I just don't think he's more than a position coach. He might even be a pretty good one, I don't know. I'd like to see someone else @ DC.

You will certainly get your wish if they don't finish in the Top 15 this season.

The defense, or the team? I could easily see Tucker keeping his job with the defense failing to reach the top 15. If the team itself finishes in the bottom half there could be problems for a lot more coaches.

Yes, i was maybe 60% on him being fired this offseason so I don't really know what they will do

I'm extremely confident that playing Houston in the middle, getting Collins back, and having promising rookies in Sutton and Ferguson to play along with Paea will fix the leaky run D.

Answer me this though, is there any realistic possibility of a regression offensively? Forte's starting to exit his prime, O-Line was ridiculously healthy last year, defenses might start figuring out ways to counter Trestman, etc. It doesn't seem likely, but it's something I've thought about.

Sure, regression is possible. It's always possible. Injuries ruin the best laid plans.

I know McCown happened last year, but that's not likely most times. Like most good passing teams the Bears are one hit on Cutler away from really struggling.
