Didn't know Orton was considering retirement. My bad.

Quinn, Henry Burris, and Todd Collins are the three worst Bears QBs I've ever seen. Honorable mention Caleb Hanie. I have no idea how or why he's still employed as an NFL QB.

Glad to see the irrational Orton hate is still alive and well. I can't think of many other non-starting QBs I'd want to backup Cutler.

Moses Moreno says "HI".

Oh and if I ever see Jonathan Quinn in the street, I'm punching him in the face for being such a terrible, terrible football thrower.

Yes, but this is part of what made him cool.

I didn't post this to be disparaging.

He was not cool at all.

We were never sure if Orton had showered that day. He might not have been completely sober.

And he still played better in '05 than the stupid 3-headed Krenzel/Quinn/Hutchinson monster the year before.

Dallas just released Kyle Orton. I'd feel quite a bit better if he was our backup over Palmer/Clausen. Go get him Phil.

Screw that. Orton sucks.

My least favorite Bears player in the last 20 years (non Olin Kreutz division).

Disliking Orton is kind of odd. But I've always geared my anger more towards our array of inept coaches (Shoop, Shea, etc.) rather than individual players.

I don't get the Orton hate either. He was a pretty decent 4th round pick who did his job. There was some stupid fan/media love of the guy, but he was fine and helped facilitate the Cutler trade.

I was a big Rex fan. Orton was maddeningly frustrating to watch in 2005, don't care that it wasn't his "fault." I was SO freaking happy when Grossman took over in the Atlanta game that year and I resented the hell out of them when they gave him the job in that "competition" in 08. Even when he played well he was boring as hell and I barely could be bothered to watch that 08 team.

Not saying it's at all rational, but that's my reasoning.

Trading for Cutler was so awesome for me in part because he was like getting a way better version of the guy that Rex was supposed to be.

Hutchinson played better. The other two were a little worse but not by that much.

The defense was just that much better.

Orton hate was so weird. I thought he was actually going to be a decent QB after the start of the 2008 season. He had solid numbers until he had that high ankle sprain halfway through the season (62% comp %, 10 TD - 4 INT, 1,669 passing yards through 7 games).

But I guess part of my like at the time was that I thought he was still projectable and was going to get better. But he never got over the hump. In Denver he got the reputation of being a 20-20 guy (ok Bill Simmons started that but it made sense). Could get you from your own 20 to the opponents 20 but wasn't talented enough to finish drives on shorter fields. Eventually he just faded away.

I was super annoyed when that Stokely play happened in week 1.

I said it wasn't rational.

I also hated Theriot even when he was actually good in 2008.

I don't get the "projectible" stuff. Orton was okay but never going to even threaten to get over the hump.

Other than the "stupid fan love" angle there is really no comparison between Orton and Theriot.

Boring player who I hated in 2008 despite being productive for my favorite teams.

Comparison made (and how much of a comparison beyond general [expletive] like this can you make for guys in two separate sports?)

And, yeah, stupid fan love. I almost forgot that part. The whole 2005 meatballs for Orton thing really galvanized my pro-Rex, anti-Orton stance.

I turned on Rex pretty fast.

After 2006 I still had hope that he could iron out the horrible games and be more of the guy who led the league in 100 rating games.

I defended him longer than I should have.

By contrast, I was irrationally hating him before it really made sense to; it had more to do with his stupid munchkin Vulcan face and a weird hunch he was some kind of super hardcore Christian, like a Tebow before Tebow, than any viable criticisms.

I also loved that when they pulled him off the bench against Oakland in 07, the first thing he did was throw a bomb to Berrian for a TD from like the 50.

We can ignore the whole blatant hold by (I think) Fred Miller on that play

You thought the Sex Cannon was a Tebowite?

I did. I was convinced he was some kind of secret born again creeper. To be fair, I was enjoying certain chemical alterations a LOT more back then.

I've always thought Rex and Tebow looked sort of similar in some way (like in their faces)...and they kind of talked the same. Weird that someone else made that comparison even though it was based on something entirely different.

Never thought Rex was a crazy bible thumper though.

That's a pretty weak attempt to compare them. Theriot was a huge douchebag who was completely replaceable as a mediocre second baseman who was a fixture for four straight years in the everyday lineup. Orton basically played 2 years as a Bear because he had to step in for somebody else and then was part of the trade for Cutler, the greatest transaction in Chicago sports over the past 20 years. He was just a goofy schlub who filled his role and was gone.

The fan/media obsession is a similar thing.

For some reason I thought Lovie was crazy religious at the time, too.
