Is he going to get a guaranteed contract? I was kind of hoping Wilson and Earl would be able to compete for the job. Or would he just be replacing Weems?

I really don't think Earl is on the team.

 

And I remember hearing rumblings that they really want Wilson to have a role in the offense next year. Might not even want him on returns.

Assessment from a Lions fan on Reddit...

 

Solid pass-rusher. Has really developed in the last year or so. He's entering his prime and has a high motor. Not amazing at run-defense, but can get pressure on the QB. Benefited a lot from having a strong D-Line around him. Good pickup for Chicago.

 

Also...

 

PFF graded him as the Lions best DE. He had the second most QB hurries in the team, behind only Suh.

Very, very happy with the Young signing. Hixon? I'm fine with him, whether its to replace Weems or Earl. Hope we keep Peanut and if so, I think we'll be done until the draft.

the fucked up rookie pay scale from the previous CBA still has him with a crippling $22M* cap figure, and he's been dragging his feet on an extension or restructuring his deal; he's a loser

 

*or, basically what 2 future HOFs (Revis & Ware) just pulled in combined, on the open market

I'm sure they will address the defense even more in the draft, but I like what they have done here. I guess the moves so far increases the likelihood they go after a DT with the first pick?

Yeah. The guys he signed are like Craig Steltz replacements (not that they aren't better than Conte and Wright...just saying I can't imagine they'd keep them from signing someone good if a good opportunity arose).

Those guys can be used for ST or be cut. Those don't preclude further safety signings at all.
