Roberto Garza resigned with the Bears...

Brad Biggs @BradBiggs

#Bears have re-signed C Roberto Garza to a 1-year contract.

$1.5 m

Have to draft his replacement this May.

I still think Josh Beekman can take over!

There is nothing wrong with signing veteran players in free agency. We had very good success with the veteran players we signed in Chicago and Tampa, particularly on the offensive line, where we had some injuries and younger players who failed to meet expectations. The key here, however, is to not enter the marketplace as a hostage to a number of positions that require upgrades.

The part I took issue with is the notion that they had very good success with veteran offensive lineman in Chicago. Angelo absolutely went into multiple offseasons as a hostage to the need to acquire offensive linemen specifically because he never drafted them after his first draft. It wasn't that "young players failed to meet expectations" it was because he ignored the offensive line and relied on 30 years for too long.

The biggest problem with Angelo were his misses in the early rounds. After 2006, without looking he didn't hit on any of the first 2 rounds. Many of those misses were a complete miss with not even drafting a solid starter, let alone a fixture.

Angelo did well with vet offensive lineman once and we went to the Super Bowl. He held onto Miller and Brown too long and then never replicated that success while also busting on both his first round OL. Like most things Angelo the early years were far superior.

Edit- actually three or four good vet FA as Garza and Tait also ended up being nice signings. Anything post 2006 was just awful though.

He did okay, forced to overspend on veterans, but it's not like that is what led to the Super Bowl. It was Urlacher, Lovie and one or two Angelo drafts that created a monster defense.

Only one of those guys he overspent on was Tait. Garza and round one of Miller and Brown were all value signings. That was a legit good line but even at the time obviously was gonna be a short lived one and he rode it for like three years. Then he went into Williams, Omiyale , etc and we know the rest.

Yea the D was the main reason we were a Super Bowl team but that OLine was a big part of what was our best offense between Erik Kramer and Marc Trestman.

Considering both Brown and Miller were June cut guys though I'm totally willing to chalk it up to luck on Angelo's part and agree he was a failure who didn't know what he was doing. But it would be false to say he didn't get one Oline right in his time.

Michael Wright said it sounds like Kelvin Hayden is coming back.

Don't really get Hayden and Rosario coming back. Hopefully, neither got guaranteed money and can be cut if they don't win backup jobs. But I'd rather go with younger backups and try to develop some talent for a change.

Yeah, I have to assume neither got guaranteed money and can be replaced if necessary.

I was kind of hoping Onobun would make the team as the back up this year. But, competition is a good thing I suppose.

Me too. I have a hard time believing that you can't correct a guy's ability to catch a football. It's the easiest thing to do on a football field. He can run, get open, decent blocker. But then again, he has been cut by several times in his career.

So, you were in favor of keeping Kellen Davis then?

Onubun is a 3rd TE at best. Not a starter like Davis was. Davis was also bad at everything. Completely different situation.

I don't think catching is the easiest thing you can do on a football field. Maybe while standing still with no defenders. But running is the easiest thing. If you can run, you can run. But it doesn't mean you can catch, or play.

Onobun was pretty much the worst football player I've ever seen.

if they had a better DC (Marinelli) i'd be interested

Don't know how well Marinelli would handle Jordan because I'm not sure he's a fit in the 4-3.

Not exactly surprising, but noteworthy just the same. It's been real, Devin.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Devin Hester is as good as gone from Chicago.

Hester has been with Chicago since 2006. There are rumblings Hester may be reunited with former coach Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay, but Rapoport does not see it happening. Hester was used as a strict return man in 2013, finishing fifth in kick-return average at 27.7 yards per return.

Yeah, too much money considering the amount of kicks that end up out of the endzone for touchbacks. More important needs. Wished he would have broken one more last year.
