Some notes from Biggs article:

-McCown is going to play next year, and he wants it to be here.

-Slauson has already started contract talks with the Bears

-Pat Mannelly is supposed to have an off-season surgery of some type. Might be iffy for him to come back next year.

-Several FA's (DJ Williams and Ratliff mentioned specifically) are expressing they want to return to the Bears. Some good quotes from them in the article.

What FA that we have would bring back a comp pick? Cutler obviously, but if he leaves, he won't just walk. Would Tillman or Melton? Or do the injuries keep them from getting us one? Jennings would, but I want him back. Can't see anyone else getting us one.

I don't know why you bring DJ back. YOu know he's going to miss about 1/2 the season. He's been hurt for most of the last 3 years and is over 30.

For veteran minimum? You likely need a slew of LB help next season, and he's another body to throw in the pile. The young guys look terrible and could use some veterans pushing them.

If we're looking at the options for QB, I think Jay coming back is the only logical choice.

There do not appear to be any viable free agent QBs out there.

The only QB I would feel comfortable drafting and putting in the lineup right away is Bridgewater, who will go to Houston unless they fall in love with Clowney. I haven't seen Bortles play, so I honestly don't know about him. I'm not too interested in Manziel as a pro. Hundley and Carr don't excite me. Boyd, McCarron, Murray, etc. seem like good college QBs who can be either above average backups, Kyle Orton (as a Bear) type starters, or complete busts.

I don't see how you can get rid of the most talented QB the Bears have ever had just to make a change and save money. With even a slightly below average defense instead of a terrible one and a healthy Jay, the Bears are an easy playoff team.

I'd rather spend the vet minimum money on someone else. Someone that could conceivably play 16 games.

Sure, ideally you can get a guy who could play 16 games. But when looking at vet minimum contributors, you are already scraping the bottom of the barrel of flawed players.

They all bring comp picks. It depends on who the Bears sign. Cutler would definitely give the Bears a pick after the 3rd. But comp picks are generally decided by what you lose vs. what you bring in. So, if the Bears sign no FAs or only players that get cut, they'll get a comp pick from Cutler down to Steltz, McManis, and Britton. But odds are they will at least sign players of that level so odds are they won't get comps for those guys at the back of the roster.

So if Cutler does leave, I think you might as well trade Marshall as well.

Yeah, he's in complete denial that Cutler could be gone.

Or he knows things. Marshall also predicted in the week before it was announced that Cutler would play in the Detroit game.

I think he also predicted he'd be back for the Dallas game.

As annoying as Mike McCaskey was, the plethora of [expletive] organizations in this league really makes me appreciate the Bears for not being a disaster.

I was thinking the same thing. There are some teams that it'd legitimately be hard to continuously pull for over time. I've complained about being cheap at times, but that may have been Angelo moreso than McCaskey.

Some of the biggest NFL disaster teams are the biggest spenders.

And the Bears were never particularly cheap. They spent big quite often, they just ignored some important spots and/or failed miserably in a few others.

GROSS.

As people have said, I'm of the "just make the defense at least less shitty" camp; they don't have to be turned into world beaters for this team to be competitive.

Right...recognition and prioritization of areas of need, and successful drafting have been the Bears biggest issues for quite some time.

Hopefully last year's draft was a turning point in that regard.

True too. I think my main gripe was more of a weird allocation of funds by Angelo than a true lack of spending.

My problems with Angelo were that he did not find an NFL caliber OC to run things and allowed the defense first, special teams second, offense third mentality of Lovie Smith to determine everything. Then his horrible handling of the offensive line depth between the Columbo draft and Williams draft, and finally, the couple of complete disaster drafts, starting with the past Super Bowl one.

Not having to tear my hair out again over the OLine this offseason is going to be nice. That alone is a good reason to be thankful Jerry is history.

I think it's fair to say the Cubs are legitimately hard to continuously pull for over time. Just because we're Cubs fans don't mean we aren't glad we don't have the same situation with the Bears.

I was kidding. The Cubs haven't been a complete disaster for the most part. They've been well run for most of the last 105 years, just incredibly unlucky.
