This team needs to settle on what they want to be and work towards it for several years.

While I agree with your overall point, football does not work this way.

Exactly. They gotta win and win big. Lovie won but is out because he didn't win big. Firing Lovie was settling on being an offensive football team. And they don't have several years because they could be starting all over next year. Not in position to take a Luck or RG3. So whoever they take is going to be a step back from Jay. Basically, sign Jay longterm and the coach/GM are tied to him. Draft a QB and let Jay walk, they are tied to the rookie.

If they get rid of Cutler it's tantamount to starting from square one, again.

I know football is shorter term by nature but these big time shakeups, year after year, just shows they don't have a real idea how to build long term success like the top tier teams do. That's what bothers me.

Well the "they", Emery has only been around 2 years. The coach for 1. So you can't possibly know if they know how to build long-term success.

I really, really feel like Jay is gone after the year.

I'm 50/50. On one hand, I think Trestman feels anyone can run this offense and Emery won't spend 100Mil if he thinks he can adequately fill the QB position for much cheaper, with a QB handpicked by him and the coach he handpicked. On the other hand, I think they know Cutler is extremely talented and know that handpicked QB will not be ready to run the offense as good as Jay in 2014.

It's going to be tough to franchise him at 20mil or whatever it will be for next season. That's a lot of money for a guy that may or may not be in your long term plans. But Jay's not going to accept a below market contract or a 1-year deal. And without Jay, you basically go into the draft planning on taking a QB and a QB only in the 1st round (Mettenberger or Carr, don't think Manziel or Boyd are of interest and none will be there mid-2nd). Emery has shown the last 2 offseasons that he doesn't like to go into the draft desperate at any 1 position.

If I had to bet money on it today, the Bears franchise Cutler and draft a QB in the first 3 rounds. Jay is either a lameduck QB or playing for this longterm deal again, with a future option already in place.

If we're looking at a QB in round one I don't know why Manziel wouldn't be in consideration

I'll use walterfootball (not the greatest mock draft, but does anyone else knows a good mock draft website?) to show you where he has the QBs going in the 1st and what pick. It's a long way away and anything can happen, but it's just an idea on who the Bears could be looking at in the 1st IF they decided to go that route.

Teddy Bridgewater (1st- Jags)

Brett Hundley (3rd- Vikings)

Johnny Manziel (13th- Eagles)

Tajh Boyd (14th- Browns)

Derek Carr (17th- Cardinals)

Bears at 19th- got Tommy Jernigan

Then 2nd/3rd round has

Zach Mettenberger (34th- Bucs)

Stephen Morris (71st- Texans)

AJ McCarron (73rd- Rams)

Bears taking Aaron Murray with the 83rd pick

Logan Thomas (93rd- 49ers)

Now Marcus Mariota could declare for the draft and probably will be the 2nd QB selected after Bridgewater and drop everyone down the list. I think Mariota will stay another year. If you use Charlie's mock draft there, then it's just Bridgewater/Mariota/Hundley/Manziel being picked before the Bears.

Mettenberger is going in the first round. I don't think Hundley or Mariota turn pro, but Mariota will go top three if he does.

Glad I missed this game.

Use your words better.

Being correct when you don't want me to be doesn't mean they're used poorly.

Anyway, can we talk about how I called this in week two? I don't know why you guys didn't see it much earlier.

This defense really sucks in a way that can't be fixed by coaching.

I have a buddy that's a Cutler hater, and he's been pushing for Garoppolo from Eastern IL.

Overall:

Through two games of film study on Garoppolo, you see that he's the definition of a pure gunslinger. You see some young Brett Favre in him, also some Jay Cutler. He has a solid build and offers the ability to make plays outside the pocket, but isn't a quarterback that's going to tear a defense apart.

He'll rely heavily on solid playmakers on the outside and a good runningback. His ceiling as of this point through two games scouted is a Top-100 prospect, but most likely will be a mid to late day three developmental pick by a team that already has an established veteran quarterback who Garoppolo can sit behind and solidify his mechanics and decision making skills.

If they let Jay walk, they better have his replacement ready next year.

50/50 on your preference or on what you think they'll do? I'm 100 on keeping Jay, but yesterday looked to me like a "give him enough rope to hang himself situation." I feel like they might be looking for an excuse to let him walk.

What a poor game to pick to do that, if that's indeed what they were doing.

Nobody has any idea of what you're talking about.

And they won't.

The choice is very clear: pay Jay, or accept mediocre QB play next year (possibly for longer after that, too).

Yeah, they're really backed into a corner with this and I have no idea how anyone could think letting him go is an option.

There are people who think keeping him is not an option, so I guess I can understand the less insane view.

What they'll do. I think my history on this site clearly show I'm 100% in on Jay being here forever.

It complicates matters that he isn't healthy, so we can't even get a full season in Trestman's offense to judge against.

I get the feeling its a lot of that 'you've got to tear it down before you can build it up' fallacy that sometimes comes up with the Cubs. That obviously doesn't make too much sense in the aforementioned fluid situation of the NFL. At this point, the search for impact talent should be for the defense, but a quarterback in the early rounds shouldn't be excluded. Part of the reason you give Jay the extension is to have a few years to make the right pick at QB., avoiding having to address a need on draft day.

That's what I thought, but was just trying to clarify. I do think the team may be looking more aggressively to move on than I previously assumed.

I think we witnessed the downside of the press getting all excited for Trestman's "gutsy" 4th down call in the previous game. He made quite a few poor decisions in this one. The early decision to skip a FG and go for it on 4th again was poor, and the entire 2-point conversion situation was terribly run. Keeping a broken Cutler in there just topped the list of many weird ones.

I'm not so sure the Bears will have mediocre QB play next year if there is no Cutler. Better oline and plenty of weapons on offense. Look what a mediocre McCown does. He gets points on the board with this offense.

It was not a good game for him. Really bothers me that we lost by 2 and had a FG that was never attempted.

The play calls on the 2-pt conversion also really lame.

The play call on the 4th down attempt was more of a problem for me than the decision to go for it.
