Garza saying Jay was in a lot of pain the whole game. I was stuck with radio so couldn't see any of that. But if that's true he shouldn't have been playing.

Season's not over by any means, but Jay is more banged up now. Makes you wonder if McCown could have played better

The Lions have a 2 game lead now with the tiebreaker, it's pretty much over unless the Bears can finish 6-2.

I don't know if it was the pain or just losing his accuracy. Either way McCown at the very least needed to be in for the last 3 drives.

With that said Alshon played good, but dropped 2 TD's.

And instead of people praising him for gutting out a halfway decent performance, you'll have them bitching about how he should have come out.

Wildcard in play if SF wins

Yeah I know. It's one thing though if we have a backup QB that can't do anything. But the drop off, if any, wasn't going to be much.

That's not on Jay, that's on the coaching staff. He's not coming out unless he can't walk and the staff has to make the decision for him when he's not as effective as the backup would be.

Also, there's maybe 2 guys who make the play where Alshon dropped it in the corner and one of them is on his team and the other one is Chocobot. The first one he had to have though.

Cutler was cleared, so I have no issue with him starting the game. And he looked fine in the first half, until the very end, when Trestman's play calling left him doing far too much nonsense, and left him open on being hit. And then in the second half, I feel like I can count on one hand the number of dropbacks where he wasn't hit.

Trestman's play calling should have protected his QB from some of that. And the running game being a festival of suck contributed, since I kind of doubt the plan was for him to throw the ball 40 times.

Wildcard very much in play. Even with GB, who the Bears have the tiebreaker over. Even if Carolina loses, and they still have NE, NO twice, and the Jets, who are good sometimes. The Bears can take out Arizona and Philly on their own.

Cutler hurt his ankle, xrays negative.

I think it's a convenient way to save face and pull cutler for ineffectiveness after letting him continue to hobble around in pain the entire second half.

Could be wrong of course.

Trestman has been pretty forthright in his tenure. Much more than Lovie. I don't think you want to lie about Jay's ankle. With that said, Jay said he was 100% coming into this game, but he clearly wasn't. Trestman said he took out the plays where Jay had to be mobile ahead of time. That's not a good thing to do against a Detroit line that forces you to move and against which you need to call for some roll outs to get time.

I don't think that's true. McCown came in with a week of practice after not starting a game in 2 years and did what Cutler couldn't ever do. He won in Green Bay. He lead an offense that put up four points shy of what Cutler's offense put up in the last three games in Green Bay. Cutler tends to make stupid throws. He gets rattled easy. Cutler is just awful. I hope they let him walk.

Is this the prevailing thought up there? I just can't fathom this being a common idea and this is coming from a generally pretty smart guy.

Panthers win in SF further damaging the Bears playoff chances. Still a lot of season to play but the bears probably went down about 25-30% odds

I'm sure it is. And honestly, I can understand someone thinking like that. Its wrong. But I understand, especially with the loss still fresh. Jay makes stupid throws, but he makes a lot more amazing throws.

The problem is. ...if not Jay, who? McCown isn't a real option. Draft may be, but starting a rookie QB who's probably the 4th or 5th best at his position (even if you take a QB in the 1st) is not ideal.

I wish they fired Lovie a year earlier. This team could be really good if the offense was established last year. Now they face the real possibility of losing all the great progress from this year with a new QB next year.

Seems like this is our story every year. Everything's transitory. They are reinventing themselves too much.

This team needs to settle on what they want to be and work towards it for several years.

Dumping Cutler is only going to result in several years of developmental football. It's not the answer.

While I agree with your overall point, football does not work this way.

Well they can't just redo the whole thing every year and that's what they've been doing.

No, the whole "spending several years working towards" something; that's not realistic.

And what have they been redoing every year besides the parade of OC's? Granted, that's a significant part, but you're talking like they've had a huge regular team turnover. They brought in Trestman, but that was a necessary singular move.

Exactly. They gotta win and win big. Lovie won but is out because he didn't win big. Firing Lovie was settling on being an offensive football team. And they don't have several years because they could be starting all over next year. Not in position to take a Luck or RG3. So whoever they take is going to be a step back from Jay. Basically, sign Jay longterm and the coach/GM are tied to him. Draft a QB and let Jay walk, they are tied to the rookie.

If they get rid of Cutler it's tantamount to starting from square one, again.

I know football is shorter term by nature but these big time shakeups, year after year, just shows they don't have a real idea how to build long term success like the top tier teams do. That's what bothers me.
