I have mixed feelings about Bailey. Given his age he'd be a more likely target for the front office, but I'm also distrustful of 2013 being the new norm. That may be irrational because he's a Red or that he was average for so long, but I can't shake the feeling that he's more Edwin Jackson than Anibal Sanchez.

Of course, the dilemma is that the better he does this year, the more likely he is to be locked up before FA, and the worse he does, the less desirable he is as a target.

Whether you particularly like Bailey or not seems to be secondary to the fact that it's one less starting pitcher on the FA market when were supposedly going to spend money supply-demand and all.

Source: #Orioles have made substantial progress on Jimenez and are working to finalize deal. Believed 4 years and around $48 mil.

Fix those glasses, they're sticking out too far on his right ear.

At the very least, wouldn't it make some sense to take Jimenez at that price + a few mil to ensure he comes and then turn around and trade Samardzija to whichever of Baltimore/Toronto loses out on Santana? Or even aside from that, you could take higher ceiling guys further away from MLB when you flip Hammel/Villanueva/Veras in July if you're that worried about the value of Pick 45. Or sell off all your IFA space to recoup some value. It's just hard for me to reconcile not being involved with any of the 3 of Garza, Jimenez, and Santana when they're giving Hammel 1/6. Either their prognosis on all of those guys was not good(possible, not probable), they're holding a really high standard of future value for FA SP(possible), and/or they're being overly dogmatic about losing a pick(seems probable). Frustrating.

Apparently Jimenez deal is done pending a physical

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles have agree to terms on deal with Ubaldo Jimenez.

Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reported previously that the deal was close, and now Rosenthal says a physical is all that's in the way to completing it. Of course, with the O's we've learned not to take the physical for granted. Rosenthal says Jimenez's contract will be "close" to the four-year, $48 million deal Kubatko reported. The righty held a 3.30 ERA and 194/80 K/BB ratio in 182 2/3 innings for the Indians last season.

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that the Reds and Homer Bailey have agreed to a six-year, $105 million contract extension.

The two sides were rumored to be close to a deal over the past couple of days and have now reached agreement. According to Sheldon, the contract includes a mutual option for a seventh year which carries a $25 million salary or a $5 million buyout. Bailey was due to hit free agency next offseason, but he'll now be under team control through at least 2019. The Reds are banking on the past two years being a sign of things to come for the 27-year-old right-hander.

This will probably used as a measuring stick for Samardzija's negotiations. He (2.9) and Bailey (3.1) are similarly close in fWAR the past two seasons. That said, what the Cubs have been rumored to have been offering him isn't far off from what Bailey got.

Last I heard the cubs were offering 5/55, and even if you're being charitable and saying there buying out his last 2 arb years you've got 3/40 for 3 FA years which isn't remotely close

My memory is 5/75 with Samardzija wanting 5/100, but I can barely keep straight the varying degrees of speculation and discussion.

And of course they'd be buying out his arb years.

5/55 was definitely bandied about at some point. Don't recall any 5/75 talk.

Cuban infielder Aledmys Diaz is eligible to sign with teams starting today. Cotillo reported last week that he'd start fielding offers yesterday and sign within a few days.

There was an almost-certainly-fake report over at BCB that he was signing with the Cubs, but it got me thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if we did?

We've got tons of money unspent. And despite the projection for next year, at the moment we have two pretty big holes in the infield. He's projected to get $20m-$30m and is considered either MLB-ready or very close.
