But somebody last page or so said they are potentially building something special!

well they could be. they're likely to have two more lottery picks in the offseason draft, plus a [expletive] load of 2nd round picks and tons of cap space. but for this year, they have a pathetic roster and are going to lose a lot.

@MikePradaSBN: The 76ers lineup right now: Eric Maynor, Elliot Williams, Hollis Thompson, Byron Mullens, Henry Sims.

Good God. I hope they end up with the worst possible pick on all the lottery picks (not sure how many they really have). Funny part is Silver see no evidence of tanking. Oh that's right... he see it as "rebuilding" and not tanking. They may not be tanking on purpose, but they're definitely tanking to get the best possible chance of getting that #1 pick.

whats the difference?

Umm... Nothing? I'll send you a link where Silver explains the "difference". http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/17/adam-silver-on-tanking-absolutely-no-evidence-that-any-team-has-lost-a-single-game-on-purpose/

So basically you can throw out a very shitty team and it won't be called "tanking" because even though you're losing almost every game, those shitty players you have are trying their best to win games.

Tanking is finding ways to lose games your roster should be able to win by benching healthy players and calling them injured, benching players who start out a game hot, etc. That sort of behavior has been admitted to in the past in the NBA.

Rebuiliding is stockpiling future assets (cap space and picks primarily) which leaves an awful roster. That seems to be more of what the Sixers are doing. Sure, one of their primary benefits might be to also get a better draft pick this year, but short of changing the draft process to not reward the worst teams I don't know you legislate against that. Bottoming out has other benefits besides just the draft pick.

You could give Philly the #2 and #6 pick, isnt that their best case scenario? They could get that and probably they would continue to suck. That would be Parker and one of these combo guards like Smart or Exum. So you have a young core of Noel, Parker, Exum/Smart and MCW. That team is gonna suck for a long, long time. Thats best case scenario.

It's currently #2 and #11 based on record. Call that Wiggins and McDermott. Let's say that one of their 4 2nd rounders turns into a good rotation wing, call that Glenn Robinson. Give them Lance Stephenson in FA. Noel/Young/Wiggins/Stephenson/MCW with McDermott, Robinson, and some misc. FA help at G & C is a very nice nucleus. It needs the young guys to take off so it doesn't win the East next year or anything, but hardly "gonna suck for a long, long, time".

Wait, why are they picking Smart and Exum? Are we just assuming they have no interest in Wiggins, Embiid, Randle or Parker?

His hypothetical has them picking Parker and one of Smart or Exum.

Noel is raw, offensive very limited, and coming off ACL. MCW good rebounder, posting numbers based entirely on usage, hes among the worst in ts% and TO ratio in the NBA. Maybe his efficiency will improve when he gets more around him but if you are looking at him as a cornerstone for your franchise you are in trouble. That core would need Jabari Parker to be an absolute beast. If he turns out Deng-like due to his lack of explosiveness and mediocre shooting ability, yes, that team will suck. He looks a little deng-like to me.

Yes, if you're willing to write off a bunch of young, talented players that either haven't played a full professional season or haven't been drafted yet, and also if you think they are going to do absolutely nothing with all that salary cap room, I can definitely see how you'd think they are destined to be terrible.

Sixers have the best point guard in the NBA. Love to see MCW get some help there.

CUSE!!!!

Granger signs with the Clippers, Caron Butler signs with the Thunder. Those aren't bad pickups for either team. Both should at least help with spacing at the least as Butler/Granger are good-very good shooters.
