What's so special about josh reddick

Elite defense and power, 3 years of team control and entering his prime years, "down" season(and wrist injury) plus Oakland's price consciousness make him available. Basically you take on the injury risk and take advantage of Oakland's small market to get a 3-5 win RF. He's also a Theo/Jed product coming from the Boston system, so the interest would be there if he's truly available.

Just what we need, another guy who struggles to keep his OBP above .300.

I think there's a bit of anchoring going on there with Lincecum's previous salary(not to mention history with the club). The same team signed Pence for 5/90 a few weeks ago and that's much more in line with offseason expectations.

EDIT: SF may have overpaid to get him to take a 2 year deal too.

Jesus Christ, get the new advertising up before the Cubs become the Rays also in how they have to nearly let everyone go.

It's not a matter of having to let him go. I don't see it as very likely we'll contend in 2014 and I'm not at all confident Shark is ever going to be more than he is right now. I'll take the very solid prospect package and the extra 15-20 mill he'll be getting in a few years to spend elsewhere.

Seriously, this is how it's going to be all offseason. Everybody needs to recalibrate their expectations for what FAs should get.

I said that three years ago when everyone thought every contract was so hilarious and every gm was so stupid but we got Scott baker for 5m so we're all good.

Sorry, I'm taking the under for 9 million being the new cost of a win based on this one deal. I don't doubt salary inflation, but I do doubt this deal as the new norm.

The worst part of this deal is that it probably pushes the Indians closer to giving Ubaldo the qualifying offer, if they were on the fence before.

If that ends up the case, Ricketts will need bodyguards at games.

I think Ubaldo gets the QO and still gets a 4/5 year deal for more than 15 per.

how effing much is tanaka going to get now

The Dodgers are in, Texas and Seattle too- both with solid success previously in this market. Throw in the Yankees and this is going to get crazy.

FYI on Yankees- they spent 60 mill in luxury tax money last year and are trying to get back to 189 this year to restart their luxury tax clock. Not because of cheapness, but because they're paying a ridiculous percentage of overage and want it go back to step 1.

They just sold off 49% of the YES Network, so they have cash from that laying around. They'll have the 25 mill stipend from MLB too.

The posting fee does NOT count against the luxury tax threshold either. And they have a definitive need, both for pitching and added excitement due to an aging team. No one, other than the Dodgers can compete with a desperate Yankees team. And the Dodgers aren't in any real need for Tanaka-the Yanks are. I 'd definitely take the over at 60 mill on the posting fee. And I won't blink if its over 80.

I actually think we will use it to spend on signing some of the prospects to contract extensions (Yes, this is assuming some of them pan out), which is the plan I like better anyway. Free agency pretty much blows and is not the way I want to build a team.

I mean, it's cool and all that the Rays have been able to do what they've done, but it shouldn't be something to aspire to when you're the [expletive] Cubs in mother [expletive] Chicago.
