Actually, math doesn't add up but Nightengale, Wittenmeyer say 2.5 for 2nd year. At any rate, solid move.

I thought I saw $1.5 for the first year, $1.5 for the second year, and then either $500k buyout of $2.5 for a third year.

Great news, I really like Sweeney and his utility to this roster for the next year or two.

It is, I read it wrong.

Don't cancel those season tickets quite yet, SSR!

I agree though, good move. He's a fairly solid 4-5 OF depth guy, with potential to be more.

Do we think Sweeney or Bogusevic could put up Schierholtz' numbers if given the AB's?

Hmm, yeah probably not that far off. A tad less power maybe?

yeah, as long as you're talking about schierholtz's numbers for the whole season. my initial answer to this question was going to be NO, but that was before i checked and noticed that nate schierholtz paid about as much attention to the cubs in september as i did, making his season totals more mediocre than i would have guessed..

177/212/291 in 85 pa. woof.

I'd almost expect Sweeney to outproduce Nate when considering defense. Bogusevic, I don't expect much of anything from him. He's still free (with at least one option? - though they may need his permission) so whatever, but I don't see anything in his record that shows we should expect much.

Well if this doesn't convince Girardi to manage, I don't know what will!

You're looking at it all wrong. The prospect of having a manager like Girardi convinced Sweeeny to sign 12M below market value.

I think it's a good signing. He's a transition player. He's good enough to prevent junk from floating up from the farm.

To me this looks like an ultimate low risk signing. He can hold the fort for 2-3 years and by then we will have a better idea what we have for CF (Szczur, Almora, et al.). If someone is ready and he is having a solid season he could be flipped for prospects. Then again, if he is having a good year even of there isn't someone ready I wouldn't put it past Hoyer to trade him anyway and fill in with "junk" if needed. This is a VERY tradable contract for a serviceable utility outfielder.
