Week 5 Saints (4-0) @ Bears (3-1) Noon CT Fox/780

I don't think it's fair to call Colston random at this point, with all his accomplishments. But it's very fair to question whether Colston would be random in most other situations. 7th round pick. Not very well known out of college. Not a freak athlete at a position full of freaks. He lucked into a situation with an offensive genius of a coach, a HOF QB, and he got a break with a lot of injuries forcing him into the lineup early on in his career.

That being said, he's taken advantage of the situation and become a good WR, and the league is full of these guys. Welker was rather random before NE. But neither of those guys are close to being random at this point.

And all indications should have pointed toward Marshall being random too: 4th rounder out of Central Florida.

Marshall's been a success in 3 separate offenses.

Because he is a great WR.

Since we're allowing cubbievirus to spawn a pointless debate, thought I'd just feed it a little :P

In terms of the actual game next weekend, I was hoping to see something in tonight's game with the Dolphins that might give me some reason to think the Bears would hang with the Saints.

I know they are different teams, but I'm not seeing how the Bears slow down the Saints without significant QB pressure. I don't see the coverage happening against all these options if Brees has time to throw, and the Bears aren't bringing the pressure. And the Saints' D is playing much better. The PF/PA ratio is pretty impressive. Without a few turnovers to tip the balance, I don't see the Bears' units hanging with this team right now.

I'm going to give an early prediction on this one:

34 - 24 Saints. Bears drop to 3-2. They climb back up to 4-2 the following week against the trainwreck Giants.

Ridiculous was being kind. It is stupid. This isn't baseball you can't just compare those stats and say they are similar.

lol, whatever goony.

back to the initial point, do you think a guy with Colston's career numbers is a "random WR"? Because I think that isn't just ridiculous, it's stupid.

Did you ignore raw's post? Goony is right.

They have a collection of randoms at WR and no real between the tackles runner.

Colston and Brandon Marshall have remarkably similar career numbers, so unless you consider Marshall a random, then Colston sure isn't.

Colstons QB has routinely put up 4500-5200 yards every year. Marshall has played with a 3700 yard QB just once.

Or you ignored the end of my post where I acknowledged that Cutler is no Drew Brees

Marshall also played 2 seasons in Miami with Matt Moore and Chad Henne being the two primary QBs and he averaged 83.5 catches, 1,114 yards and 4.5 TDs. That is a feat of epic proportions

Does anyone else find it extremely annoying when people/media refer to Cutler as 'Bad Jay' or 'Good Jay'? That isn't used with any other QB and it's just a lazy narrative.

Oh come on you can't be serious. You think Cutler is the only one who has his games parsed like that?

I don't think so. Did you see the Saints vs. TB? Totally different team outside of that dome.

In particular, on ESPN and other networks I see the 'Good Jay Bad Jay' thing pretty often. Maybe it's because I dont pay as much attention to other QBs, but I loathe that narrative.

Also, the NO receivers are more system based receivers IMO, hence why I think they're a random collection of talent. Sure Colston is good, but I don't think he possesses nearly as much talent as Brandon Marshall. That's an awful and wrong comparison.

Did you see the Bears defense last week?

There's nothing system based about Graham, Colston or Sproles, who are the 3 leading receivers for Drew. Have you guys seen the catches Colston has made this year, including game winners in traffic?

We can agree that Marshall is a beast, right? But the premise that Saints receivers are automatically downgraded because of their system while other teams' players are undervalued is crazy talk. I could just as easily say that with all the different weapons Drew has (TD passes to 5 different receivers) that that devalues our guys. They get thrown the ball, they catch it and we rack up 300 or 400 yards passing every game. IMO, this is using fantasy football logic.

The defense that gave up 16 points on normal fields not shortened by Cutler turnovers and poor ST?

I agree with that, but I think everyone outside of Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers and maybe Matt Ryan get overly negative attention when they have a bad game. Right now Wilson and Luck are teflon when it comes to that even though they regularly play mediocre.

Red Zone defense is still defense, but I was looking more at what Reggie Bush did. I know there was this discussion yesterday, but Sproles is pretty damn good.

Look, I have said in this thread that I am really torn on this game and I think it could go either way. I am not trashing the Bears, but rather trashing all this hyperbole-totally different team on the road, awful receiver comparison, rabble rabble.

It's largely a Bear fan thread, and there's pro-Bear "fan arguments" going on. Go figure.
