News is just breaking now. Who will replace him, and do you think the game is better or worse from his reign as commish?

I don't care for him, I think he's done a lot of both good and bad for the game. I'm glad to see him go.

Yeah, if for no other reason than how much worse the croneyism amongst ownership has gotten in the game since he took over.

[expletive] Bud. Mainly because the new CBA sucks. On top of that, I never gave a [expletive] about steroids, neither did Selig until the players were caught under his watch. Followed by an immediate holier than thou approach. Which just came off insincere as hell.

He's been great financially for the game, horrible in all other regards

The first wild card was pretty successful. But, yes the money side of things is what he has to hang his hat on.

much better. there hasn't been a strike or lockout in 20 years and the game is more profitable and popular than it was when he took over. expanded postseason has been a roaring success as well. baseball - which was already a strong and well-developed industry when he began - has seen its revenue grow by 600 percent in less than 20 years. if a ceo oversaw that kind of growth, he'd be regarded as a genius.

the attempted contraction of the twins and expos was probably the biggest black mark on his record. still, maybe the best mlb commissioner in history and should be in cooperstown soon.

The first expansion was good, the second one is a forced tie breaker between teams that might not tie. I'd list that as a failure.

It's a play-in game, and it's awesome. It simultaneously creates an exciting one-game playoff and creates a meaningful difference between winning the division and a wild card.

I guess, I don't like how the whole thing is set up. I think it should be the two worst records at the least playing in it. Not the two wild cards teams if they have better records.

i don't totally love it, but in terms of pure marketing, it's a great idea. same with making the all-star game result determine home field advantage in the WS. i remember the all-star game thread being like 40 pages in 2008. it definitely boosts interest from fans of teams who think their team might make the WS.

It's basically, "hey these play-in games are pretty exciting. Let's make them happen every year!"

It's not a bad idea at all.

And I will go to my grave taking credit for the brilliant plan.
