I really don't see why they'd list Williams as the #1 as a formality, but whatever.

And I don't see why he'd be expected to just take over a role he was given at the beginning of camp, when he's on a 1-year deal, has only played like 5 games in 2 years, hasn't practiced in 4 weeks, and is competing with a high draft pick who can potentially stay in that role for the next 10 years.

Same reason why McClellin is listed as co-starter with Wootton at DE.

How is that the same reason? McClellin isn't a rookie, and he wasn't a mid-2nd round pick. 50 overall is hardly a time where you assume the guy will start from day one, especially at a position like MLB. I think it's quite likely that the coaching staff is not comfortable starting the rookie from the first game and are anxious to find an opportunity to insert a veteran into that slot, even if there is little expectation that Williams starts 16 games there.

Yeah. I don't see even a remote comparison with the Wootton/McClellan situation.

the article from Michael Silver seems to imply that Reggie McKenzie isn't long for Oakland.

Even if he doesn't end up being ready to start week one, I didn't think there was any question that they're going to give him every opportunity to take that spot once his conditioning gets to where it needs to be.

Let's just see how each player performs under actual game pressure. These pre-season depth chart listings are fine, but it's really going to be determined by what is seen starting Sunday in a situation like this.

Marv Lewis was watching Bears footage on Hard Knocks during the scene when he called Sanzenbacher. Wonder if it was Sanzenbacher tape or if he was doing some film study for this week.

Week 1 picks starting to trickle out.

5 of the 8 CBS guys have the Bengals winning straight up, and 7 of the 8 ATS.

The ESPN guys that have picked so far are split, 5 taking Cincy and 5 taking the Bears with Allen, Keyshawn and Carter still to pick.

Yahoo users pick the Bears but the 'experts' haven't made their picks yet, nor has Peter King at SI.

The important thing everyone is missing is the coaches have nothing to do with the depth chart posted on the Bears website.

Given the way the Bears Facebook page and Twitter account plugged it, I didn't realize this was an unofficial depth chart. Whoops.

"I like the decision with D.J. I know the young kid had a good preseason but it is the preseason," Urlacher said Tuesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000. "He did well for what they asked him to do, but I like putting D.J. in there. He's a vet, he's been there and if he doesn't do well -- which I think he will, but if he doesn't -- then you put the young guy in.

Could be telling the truth, or could be bitter that a large part of the Bears fanbase seemingly moved on from 54 after seeing Bostic.

How has the fanbase moved on? I think it just has to do with veteran players always preferring other veteran players over rookies.

I think that's a pretty honest assessment of the situation.

Meatheads or not, after those couple games Bostic had all I heard from fans was "Urlacher who?". Maybe "large part" was an exaggeration, but at any rate I'm not surprised that Urlacher prefers D.J.

7. Realize I'm considerably out of the mainstream on this one, but by the end of the season, the Bears and quarterback Jay Cutler will both be ready to move on from each other, deciding a five-year relationship is long enough. With new Bears head coach Marc Trestman energizing his game, Cutler will have some dazzling moments in 2013. But doesn't he always? In the final analysis, Cutler will play a lot like Cutler plays, with some great, some bad and some ugly. And Chicago will once again be in that 8-8 neighborhood.

I'm confident the Bears are a very good football team. It's just that the schedule is sort of difficult and we have 2 other good teams in this division and it's only 16 games. Who knows what'll happen.

I'm not really convinced that either the Vikings or Lions are good though. I'm also not sold that the Lions will wind up worse than the Vikes. I feel like there's a chance that the Vikes were a blip last year and wind up worse this year.

I think the Vikings are easily the worst team in the division.

I expect a bounce back from the Lions.
