Just for the sake of argument, the Carolina League has eight teams, seven of which are on Player Development Contracts that all expire in 2014 (the 8th is owned by its MLB franchise). Lynchburg, Potomac and Frederick are all close enough to their MLB counterparts that they get a boost in popularity and probably wouldn't be interested in switching.

You'd have to target one of the four remaining teams and hope they want to make a switch.

Don't think the teams already in the Carolina League know how bad the FSL and California League are. The Cubs couldn't make a move this past offseason for that reason.

I get all this, but I've also gotta believe they're gonna try pretty hard to get into the CL.

The Champions League?

How likely/possible would it be for the Carolina League to just add new team/organization for the Cubs instead of replacing one with them?

You need an actual owner/town to invest the money into a stadium and making the team an ongoing funded entity. My guess is if such an owner/town combination existed, it wouldn't be much of an issue, but the problem is that minor league baseball has pretty much saturated the market.

Who would own them? Where would they play?

Those are good questions, I was just spitballing. Certainly I'd think if the Cubs put it out there to the right people that they were taking proposals to move to the Carolina League they could find someone interested in putting a package together for them.

Oddly enough, the owners of the Daytona Cubs do seem to be based out of Ohio. I wonder what the story is there.

But it's way harder to just create a minor league team out of thin air than that seems to imply. They are for-profit businesses.

We need the Frontier League to just steal High-A away from the FSL, they're already out-drawing them with a far inferior product. I'd say disband the FSL entirely, but most of the orgs in the league(all but the Cubs and Brewers, actually) are dumb enough to have their ST complexes there.

Theo should just fore fit the rest of Daytona's season in the FSL and move some guys up and send the rest back to Arizona to do intra-squad games/practices/instructs they'd seriously get more out of that.

This. Or something like this. Anything else.

I have an irrational hatred of Daytona because of these rainouts, it's really quite unbelievable. :banghead:

I wasn't as much referring to Spring Training games as the rest of the activities that happen at those complexes. Player rehab, GCL games, etc. Think about all the in-season stuff that happens at Mesa and how awful it would be to be constantly interrupted by weather and poor playing conditions.

I'm sure the guys who have to do stuff in Phoenix during the summer would kill for some more rain showers.

This is definitely a part of baseball I'm not well versed on, but here's my first question: Does a team have first right to stay when their contract is up? Or is it pure musical chairs? I mean, I'm sure we've been asking around both the Carolina and California leagues, so are hush-hush type deals being made now? I'm asking because I can't imagine any team actually wanting to go to the FSL, thinking of it as an upgrade. Basically, do we have to hope other teams have falling outs with their affiliates or is this something we can make happen on our own?

It's musical chairs. I have no idea what sort of inducements the minor and major league teams give each other to make the deal work.

yeah that's true, although i suppose they have facilities where they can do some things indoors.

if they want to avoid weather interruptions, california league is the way to go, as long as you don't mind playing in an extreme offensive environment.

Then basically just have every relevant pitching prospect skip high A.

Try to get in the North in the California League to limit games at Lancaster and Victorville/High Desert, which are the most offense-friendly ballparks.
