Yeah they did and also got rid of the rule that pending FA who gets traded, even if they receive a qualifying offer (Garza for example), can't net the acquiring team a compensation pick.

Wait, they got rid of that rule, or implemented that rule?

Got rid of it, that's why guys like Garza have a slightly dimished trade value as the teams can't even net a compensation pick if he leaves via FA the next season.

So they implemented the rule. What you wrote suggests those players now net a compensation pick.

Yeah, i'm sorry, I have no idea why I wrote that. They got rid of the old rule that those players used to be able to net teams a pick that acquired them mid-season. Implemented that they now don't net picks.

The 2014 Renovation Initial Outlay Roster AKA Tom Ricketts' Wet Dream

Non-tender Ransom

Trade Barney and Villanueva for pitching prospects at the winter meetings

Lake/DeJesus/Schierholtz (Ha, Bogusevic)

Olt/Castro/Watkins/Rizzo (Valbuena, Vitters)

Castillo (some random cheap veteran for $750k)

Samardzija/Jackson/Wood/Arrieta/Grimm

Strop/Russell/Lim/Cabrera/Bowden/Rusin/Rosscup

Projected price tag (including some arbitration estimates): $69m.

You could probably have a shot to avoid 90 losses and dazzle some fans with how homegrown and prospecty it is.

That roster would have potential to be all kinds of bad. What Castro is that, that you are listing as the #3 starter? I'm not aware of any Castro SP in the system.

Seeing that makes me hopeful we'll be serious players on Masahiro Tanaka. He'll command a Darvish-type posting fee, but even if he were to be signed, the payroll would be 80ish, just with a 50 mill one time addition.

Is Tanaka worth that type of money?

He's got a ceiling of a #2 pitcher in the US according to Ben Badler (who polled a few executives and scouts), so he's not on the same level as Yu.

Oh boy:

“A million here, a million there, that’s what we can afford,” Epstein said Tuesday. “We’re not in position to throw around hundreds of millions of dollars in free agency. But if we can do it in that market, we might as well try to monopolize it as best we can.”

I infer that the quote is referring to throwing millions around in the IFA market and accepting the penalties to "monopolize" that market. I don't really mind if they don't do much on the position player side of things this winter. However, I really want them to add one more potential stud to the pitching staff. Tanaka seems like a perfect fit -- if we can afford him.

Yeah, there's way too much payroll coming free and too few gaping holes where bargain guys would be a true help for me to think that they're just going to hunt and peck with dollars this offseason.

Unless the combination of lower attendance and starting the renovations are squeezing the payroll far lower?

i infer it to mean exactly what he says...that they aren't going to spend hundreds of millions on free agents. which means they'll never sign an elite free agent (if such a thing even exists anymore), which means boy i hope baez/soler/almora/bryant are good.

I don't think they do... but if Harper, for example, makes it to free agency, I really don't doubt that they'd be seriously in on him (especially at that point in time).

How do you get to "never"?

Posted

he doesn't say "never," i'll give you that.

maybe when they're going to try to be good again in 3 years or whatever, they'll be in on a big free agent.

What is a big free agent anyways?

Do you want Hamilton and Pujols?

It's funny, but the way things are going, those are the only types of free agents that even seem to be possibilities to sign to that kind of money, because the great young players don't get there until they're older than before.. There aren't any more 2004 Beltrans or 2000 ARods (although I think Harper might just hit the market).

If teams have all this money to spend now (from TV and everything else) and they can't spend it in the draft and they can't spend it on young IFAs, then you kind of have to want them to spend it on the older stars because otherwise, there's nowhere else to put the dollars (outside of obviously locking up your own great young players, which goes without saying).

I'm with Tim, I just want Tanaka now. Hearing more about information about Abreu has depressed me.

Depressing you because he's going to be breaking hearts and inspiring dreams for another team? I agree.

Pretty much. Sounds like he's just a complete butcher in the field, and I'm not giving up on Rizzo.
