you guys know we're trading away the best player, right? i don't understand how this is like roberts or peavy. why would it be bad if other teams are involved?

Trade imminent, this player for that player, drawn out for weeks, never happens, etc. And all of that.

I just don't want a repeat of the Dempster saga last year, where the Cubs had a really good return ready to go, but that fell apart and the Cubs ended up with a lesser (albeit still good) return.

Big difference. We were on the verge of getting a consensus top 50 prospect for Dempster, and it was on him to approve it. Everyone knew that if it didn't happen, we'd be looking at a lesser return.

Here, there seems to be a decent enough package in play, but nothing worth stressing over if one or both sides moves on. If so, we likely end up with something comparable sometime between tomorrow and July 31.

Cubs Den thinks that while Texas obviously could still make trade for Chicago, that this edition has officially "fallen through" due to someone's medicals on the Texas side. They also think Washington is the mystery NL team, although that appears to be an educated guess rather than something sourced.

Does Washington even have any prospects left after the past couple offseasons?

They've got AJ Cole, who's a top 100 guy and Giolito, who's coming back from TJS. Outside of that, I'm not a fan.

Exactly. They're a terrible fit.

Unless they'd give us Rendon, of course.

Was just told it wasn't Garza on the meds. It was a Texas pitcher.

I'm just sitting back and expecting the worse.

I guess Ramirez seems likely to be the holdup. If we actually chose him over Jackson, maybe its a relatively easy fix. I'd love to wind up with Sardinas or Alfaro as the replacement, if the other 2 are Edwards and Olt.

Wow.

It just hit me after all this time that dextermorgan is named after the character from the TV show and the poster's name is not Dexter Morgan.

I'm failing to see why this is a bad thing? The deadline isn't tomorrow and if we spot a pitcher w a red flag move on and find a different deal.

Rosenthal:

The Rangers were close to acquiring right-hander Garza on Friday morning for a strong package of prospects, sources said. The cause of the snag is unclear, but likely is related to the medical records of one or more of the players in the deal.

Garza, 29, did not pitch until May 21 this season due to a strained left lat, and did not pitch after July 21 last season due to a stress reaction in his right elbow.

If the Rangers identified a problem with Garza, they might want the Cubs to accept a lesser package — and other teams, upon learning of the disruption in the negotiations, might not be willing to offer as much.

As of early Friday night, the Cubs had not re-engaged the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the teams interested in Garza, a source said. The extent of the Cubs’ discussions with other clubs was not known.

This would not be the first time that Cubs president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have failed to complete a deal that seemingly was imminent.

Obviously a deal isn't complete until the medical records have been reviewed. Could it simply be that the Cubs know what they are looking for and are extra cautious about trading a valuable asset for damaged goods? They clearly didn't miss out on anything by "failing to complete" the deal for Dan Haren in the offseason. The blame is not with Epstein and Hoyer for not completing the deals, but instead with whoever is leaking/reporting them before they are done.

I blame all of our broken, seemingly done deals the last few seasons on Twitter.

One thing I remember Boston fans saying is that Epstein really seems to revel in taking deals to the brink and then pulling the plug. Or, more charitably, he absolutely refuses to cave to the pressure of a nearly done deal.
