FWIW, Zastryzny v. the SEC: 71 IP, 73 H, 65/18 K/BB, 3.04 ERA

I think that even though their pitch mix is different, Travis Wood is a good point of reference. Both will use a fastball they command at varying speeds combined with a good off speed pitch, both are LHP with fly ball tendencies. I wonder if they'll try to force a cutter on him, it would definitely seem to fit Zastryzny as it does Wood.

EDIT: Also, on the topic of his signability..

@Dave_Matter Zastryzny stopped short of saying he's definitely leaving Mizzou for pro ball ... but he is. "All signs point to me being gone."

At least one of Connor Jones and Kyle Serrano will be there if the Cubs are so inclined.

They may be there but only because of signability questions. Perhaps the Zystryznky guy was chosen so that they would have money to make a run at them. They'll have all day tomorrow to negotiate with them...

My hope is that they went with Zystrynsky to save some coin on a guy they knew would sign in the second to ensure they wouldn't lose that higher bonus allotment if they go after a tougher sign later. I really want Connor Jones.

Wasn't really serious with it last night, but Tyler Skulina would work for me at the start of the 3rd.

At this stage, I'd be a tad surprised if Connor Jones signed (who really has the money to meet the demand ... haven't really pondered it, but doesn't feel like the top spending teams have that much to be able to afford a Jones, unless they really punt some picks).

Is Bobby Wahl still around? That might be a target. Chris Okey and Jon Denney both could be considerations.

I really think those two are going to last till the 11th round, along with Karsten Whitson. I don't think teams are going to be willing to risk their pool space for a specific pick over such tough signs.

well what a crappy draft. I was hoping if they took Bryant that at least they took him at a deal and could overslot with this pick. *sigh*

You should trust the people in charge of this draft. They're pretty smart and pretty good at what they do.

Wait a minute. He spells Chris with a K. I need to reevaluate

I had a problem with this as well, but I'm not going to knock him because of [expletive] parents.

Aren't scouts supposed to check out the moms hips and how the dad aged? If you can cite a fathers athletic achievement you can dock him for naming him kris.

I know you don't like Bryant but he's a unanimous top 3 talent who comes without the risk of injuries that are so common with pitchers. He's a Boras client, he's not going to come cheap. They took a guy rated as a late 2nd rounder/3rd rounder with their early 2nd round pick and it won't preclude them from going overslot later.

Guessing this is directed toward Vinestal, right?

So, who are some names to keep an eye on at 75 tomorrow?

Personally, I want prep catcher Chris Okey.

High school RHP Connor Jones would be awesome but I don't see him signing. Another highly touted prep catcher is Jonathan Denney. OFer Ryan Boldt is still on the board. TCU power righty Andrew MItchell is available, but he needs to work on control and the Cubs FO generally steer clear of guys like that. RHP out of Ole MIss, Bobby Wahl is ranked 36th by BA. Intriguing HS LHP Garrett Williams (66th best by BA) is there.

Other names:

HS RHP Kyle Serrano

HS OF Cord Sandberg

HS 3B Trey Michalczewski

HS C Tyler O'Neill

HS C Dom Nunez

HS LHP Jake Brentz

Ole Miss C Stuart Turner

Texas Tech RHP Trey Masek

North Carolina LHP Kent Emanuel

Wondering why Ole Miss' Bobby Wahl has not been drafted yet.

10-0, 2.03 ERA, 97.2 IP, .197 opp ba

Raisin?

He should have gone in the second round. I do know there are some concerns because his stuff was inconsistent this past season.

BA's best available (bolded are tough signs): http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/best-available-after-first-day/

We made it through 73 picks today and there is plenty of talent still on the board as we get ready for the third round and beyond. Righthanders Connor Jones and Kyle Serrano are tough signs and Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano—Kyle’s father—has already tweeted that his son will be attending Tennessee in the fall. Jon Denney had first-round buzz all spring, but went undrafted on the first day. Righthander Bobby Wahl had an inconsistent spring, but still offers intriguing upside as a power arm with a good breaking ball. Here’s a look at the next 25 players from the BA 500 that are still on the board:

25. Jon Denney, c, Yukon (Okla.) HS

34. Connor Jones, rhp, Great Bridge HS, Chesapeake, Va.

35. Kyle Serrano, rhp, Farragut (Tenn.) HS

37. Bobby Wahl, rhp, Mississippi

42. Cord Sandberg, of, Manatee HS, Bradenton, Fla.

48. Rowdy Tellez, 1b, Elk Grove (Calif.) HS

49. Trey Masek RHP 4YR Texas Tech

50. Andrew Mitchell RHP 4YR Texas Christian

58. Ryan Boldt OF HS Red Wing (Minn.) HS

61. Kent Emanuel LHP 4YR North Carolina

63. Tyler O’Neill C HS Garibaldi SS, Maple Ridge, B.C.

65. Dom Nunez C HS Elk Grove (Calif.) HS

66. Garrett Williams LHP HS Calvary Baptist HS, Shreveport, La.

67. Cavan Biggio 2B HS St. Thomas HS, Houston

68. Jared King OF 4YR Kansas State

70. Chandler Eden RHP HS Yuba City (Calif.) HS

72. Chris Okey C HS Eustis, Fla., HS

73. Tyler Skulina RHP/1B 4YR Kent State

75. Jacoby Jones 2B 4YR Louisiana State

78. A.J. Vanegas RHP 4YR Stanford

79. Michael O’Neill OF 4YR Michigan

80. Jake Brentz LHP HS Parkway South HS, Manchester, Mo..

81. Trey Michalczewski 3B HS Jenks (Okla.) HS

84. Garrett Hampson SS HS Reno (Nev.) HS

85. A.J. Puk LHP HS Washington HS, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

At 6 feet 5 and 215 pounds, there has been speculation the 20-year-old Bryant eventually would be moved to the outfield because he’s big for a third baseman. McLeod said that’s not in the plans, at least for the immediate future.

“Certainly to start his career,’ McLeod said. “He’s a taller player, but he’s very athletic.”

Cubs’ minor league infield coordinator Jose Flores has spent some time watching Bryant play and reported he was impressed with his defensive ability.

“Of course there are going to be some things he needs to work on,” McLeod said. “We spent a lot of time on that side of the game, his defensive side. We do think in the immediate future he’s going to play third base for quite a while, and if the time comes down the road where if he continues to grow or continues to get a little stronger and we feel a move may be necessary, then we’ll deal with it then.”

Bryant said he’s proud of his fielding at third and likes the “challenge” of his position, but added: “I’m open to playing anywhere in the field as long as I’m in the middle of the lineup.”

I'm just trying to analyze the money situation. First pick slot is 6.7ish mill. I'll be disappointed as hell if Bryant requires all of that(or more). We have 10.5 millish total, plus a tad over 500k in overslot available. Which I certainly think we'll use all of.

My true guess is Bryant will get between 5.5 and 6 mill. If he gets more than Buxton got last year(6), we're overpaying. The slot value of 41 was around 1.35 or so, I think. Honestly, I doubt Zastryzny gets all of that. My guess is he gets around a mill.

We "should" have some serious over slot money to play with tomorrow(or Saturday). Especially if they take a few college seniors late tomorrow. Hopefully 3 or 4 of them, as we've got plenty of depth for the most part.

The board sets up nicely for us honestly, even according to needs.

At Catcher, Jonathan Denney is worth a serious over slot. Chris Okey is as well. Plenty of other Catchers are worth 3/4 round picks as well.

Not that I think we'd take another 3B early, but Trey Michalczewski is a hell of a bat and I wouldn't complain at all.

In the OF, Ivan Wilson and Ryan Boldt are worth spending solid money on. Boldt, like Denney, could require very large money. Maybe 2 mill or so. Which I would rather spend on a pitcher, if we spend very big on one overslot.

As far as LHP goes, Jake Brentz and Garrett Williams stand out. Williams is a Vandy commit though, so I imagine he'd require a giant over slot.

For RHP, college guys like Bobby Wahl and Trey Masek are solid values. Masek may be banged up though. As Toonster mentioned, Tyler Skulina would be a solid 3rd round value too. Andrew Mitchell as well, who could move quick, if they put him in the pen. And then, there IS Karsten Whitson, who I agree with Raisin, is likely an 11th round pick. Jeff Thompson seems like a 4-6 round guy, but we've been connected to him, so maybe he goes to us early?

High School RHP is definitely available. Jones and Serrano stand far above anyone else, which tells me they won't go until the 11th, due to signability. I guess there's a chance we could use ALL of our over slot and nab ONE of them, with 2.5 or 3 mill, but I'm not sure thats the best use of money and I'd figure the FO thinks the same way. Jordan Sheffield(TJS) is an interesting case. He likely was a mid 1st rounder before he got hurt. Other High School guys on my radar are Carlos Salazar, Dustin Driver, and Brett Morales, Nick Eichholtz is a guy we've been connected to, so it wouldn't surprise me to see us pop him in the 3rd obviously.

But, as I look at other teams drafts, I'm not seeing very many teams with flexibility left. Houston took a college guy in the 2nd, so my guess is both us and them will have some extra money to spend. But the teams with multiple early picks have appeared to already spend big. We may just be battling with Houston for a couple of the bigger names left. Which is cool, as we've both got Boras standing in our way, in figuring how much over slot either team has. At least we're not at a disadvantage there. Plus, my honest guess is we may have saved a bit on Zastryzny, while Thurman could easily cost Houston full slot value.

I'll predict we go with an over slot type in the 3rd and another in the 11th, as the 2 big names we try to add. Because if the figures I'm thinking are remotely correct, we'll have saved close to a mill from slot on our first 2 picks, plus the 5% money, plus maybe another 400k in seniors in rounds 8-10. It'd give us 2 mill total over slot to spend at this point. Lots of ways to spend it, but I'm increasingly confident tomorrow will be a very fun day for us.
