I could have swore the Nomar deal wasn't announced until after the deadline. It may have been done, but I remember The Score breaking the news and I thought it was past the deadline and came out of nowhere.

It was reported as being worked on all day and officially announced an hour after the deadline.

Who reported that it was being worked on with the Cubs? It came out of nowhere.

Nomar wasn't even informed until 3:45pm that he was traded.

Bruce Levine was talking about Nomar to the Cubs in early July and it was being talked about plenty on message boards (mostly dismissively). It didn't come out of nowhere.

It was constantly being reported that it might be Clement for Garciaparra, to the point where when we heard we were getting Garciaparra, Clement thought he had been dealt.

Yep. Forgot about that part.

Yeah it was definitely discussed here, and you are right, most people dismissed the rumors and thought there was no chance it was happening, mostly because people didn't think the Red Sox would ever deal Nomar.

Was there anyone at the time who thought it was a bad move?

For the life of me, I can't recall what we even gave up

*goes from memory*

A couple of pitching prospects, iirc. Justin Jones and someone named Felix something? And we got back Murton as well.

*looks it up*

Francis. Francis Beltran, Justin Jones, Brendan Harris (the 3b prospect that once got a Pujols comp from BP) and Alex Gonzalez (I'd forgotten we gave up our SS).

Didn't we send some minor league pitching to the Twins (Justin Jones?) and Alex Gonzales went somewhere in the deal. No idea other than that without looking it up.

As soon as I read Felix I remembered Frankie something.

I remember hanging out at someones house and there happened to be another Cubs fan there who said "So what do you think about the Cubs getting Nomar?" and I said "What the hell are you talking about?" at which point I was filled in. This was pretty much my reaction:

Every time I think about that Nomar trade, I think about the September 2004 Cubs:

C Michael Barrett - .287/.337/.489/.826

1B Derrek Lee - .278/.356/.504/.860

2B Todd Walker - .274/.352/.468/.820

SS Nomar Garciaparra - .297/.364/.455/.819

3B Aramis Ramirez - .318/.373/.578/.951

LF Moises Alou - .293/.361/.557/.919

CF Corey Patterson - .266/.320/.452/.771

RF Sammy Sosa - .253/.332/.517/.849

Bench

OF Todd Hollandsworth - .318/.392/.547/.939

OF Ben Grieve - .250/.316/.563/.878

IF Mark Grudzielanek - .297/.364/.455/.819

IF Neifi Perez - .371/.400/.548/.948 (!)

Rotation of Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Clement, each of the 5 with a 110 or better ERA+, Bullpen with Dempster, Mercker, Hawkins, Remlinger, Rusch, Wuertz and Farnsworth, all of which were better than average (aside from maybe Farnsworth).

HOW DID THIS TEAM NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS, DUSTY?!

We got Matt Murton in the deal too.

Man that is infuriating. What a well put together team.

Why would you do this to me?

I was at the game the day it happened and it was discussed among fans throughout the day, in a "that would be cool but probably won't happen" sort of way.

08 lineup

C - Soto .285/.364/.504/.868

1B - Lee .291/.361/.462/.823

2B - DeRosa .285/.376/.481/.857

SS - Theriot .307/.387/.359/.745

3B - Ramirez .289/.380/.518/.898

LF - Soriano .280/.344/.532/.876

CF - Edmonds .256/.369/.568/.937 (Johnson .303/.358/.420/.778)

RF - Fukudome .257/.359/.379/.738

Only starter with an ERA+ under 110 was Marquis at 101, but that was ok given Harden's 258.

Rock solid pen built around awesome Marmol and Wood.

Freaking TEAM OPS of almost .800 (.797)

LaTroy Hawkins blew a save to the Mets. That was a soul crushing defeat. They lost 6 of 8 after that.

Same basic team makeup as 04 (04 non-pitcher team OPS was .811), except the 08 team won the division by 7 games and were 10 game clear of the playoffs when they started coasting. 04 missed the playoffs by 4 games.
