i'd take a rainout

At the moment, anything that keeps Jackson's starts from counting is probably a positive thing.

Next time Cubs are in Pittsburgh is a 4 game series that comes in the middle of a 3 week stretch of no off days.

There's an off-day right before they go from Chicago to Philadelphia, but that would mean 28 games in 27 days with no off-days so probably not union kosher.

I'm no defensive statistician, but I'm guessing Pedro Alvarez's UZR in this series is hovering around 600 or so.

At some point, you simply have to look at the coaching staff and ask why this team is as bad as they are.

I question the coaching staff when it comes to all the "aggressive" baserunning and poor use of the bullpen, but they have little to do with all the rest.

Why? Most of these are established players.

Is that any excuse for how poorly this team has played? The offense is toothless, there is no plate discipline, guys are making stupid errors, and the bullpen has been mismanaged. Plus you have roster moves like allowing Shawn Camp and Carlos Marmol to toil on the team.

If anything, when established players under perform, it says a lot about a manager and his staff.

The jury is very much out if Svuem is the right guy for the job. I don't care how bad the team was last year, he's got a terrible record this season as well.

I think you are missing the point. These aren't high caliber established players that have underperformed. This roster has blown since before Sveum showed up. A toothless offense is frustrating, but it has little to do with the manager and more to do with the identity of the players who make up that toothless lineup.

The jury is out, but this doesn't tell us much. Managers do not matter, unless they F things up. This is a bad roster that has played poorly, the same old same old.

I missed it? Was listening and not paying attention. It's like looking down at 99,997 miles on the odometer and then not looking back until 100,003. So disappointing.

My concern is whether or not this coaching staff can develop the younger players. In a couple hundred games, what young players are getting better?

Rizzo had really bad major league numbers before his exposure to this coaching staff. Travis Wood and Samardzija seem to have taken steps forward under their watch.
