Castro in the 9th this year:

.286 .324 .400 .724

Castro in extras:

.462 .563 .462 1.024

It's basically the only thing he's still good at.

I wonder if all this trade speculation has affected him. He seems to have completely fallen off a cliff in the last two weeks.

he fell off a cliff before the talk began, but I'm sure there will be a story or two claiming that is true

I agree, but he looks like he fell off another one. The AB with Rizzo on 3rd last night was one of the worst ABs I've ever seen from a MLB player who wasn't a pitcher.

Here is hoping Castro is so excited that he didnt get traded that he goes absolutely nuts and hits .350 the rest of the season lol

prolly

Actually I'm hoping that the Cubs do the smart baseball move and play him as infrequently as possible

Yah I hope so too but I somehow don't think it's likely..

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

What reason do they have to keep playing Castro over Baez at this point?

He's been so bad this season that I kind of hope LaStella and Baez both come up, and we can DFA/release both Castro and Herrera.

Oh for [expletive]'s sake.

I swear Castro somehow has the power to turn rational people's brains into a pile of mush.

Yes, by OPSing under .600 this season, he's definitely done that.

Yes, everyone knows he's had a terrible season. Talking about DFAing or releasing him at this point is dumb.

On Fanfraphs, Castro is dead last in WAR (-1.1) among 159 qualifying position players. But for what it's worth, hes not in awful company with Han-Ram, Avisail Garcia, Nick Castellanos, and Sandoval joining him in the bottom 5.

Incredibly. At this point, they may as well just DL him, call up Javy, and send him back in for repairs in the offseason.

Because that's something you can just do with no repercussions.

Yeah, it's ridiculous; people keep tying themselves into knows bemoaning what's to be done with Castro, when all they have to do is simply bench him if they want to bring Baez up. No subterfuge needed.

Some dingleberry on the score (Rosenbloom maybe) asked if the Cubs should let someone claim Castro on waivers and give him away, a la Alex Rios with the Rangers/Sox a few years back. Unbelievable

I think that's actually quite plausible.

Again: You've got a guy who has been below replacement 2 of the last 3 years, with $38m in guaranteed money remaining after this year.

I'm not DFAing him and staying on the hook for all that money unless he's this bad for like a whole another year, but a lot of good could be done with that money if someone wants to take it on.

Obviously, but that moron was saying to do it now. That's a last resort move.

There's a difference between DFAing him and letting someone have him if he's waiver claimed. It's not time for the first one, but I think you could make a case for the second one.

As bad as Castro was in 2013, at least he still had 34 doubles and 10 home runs. There was at least something of value. But, damn, he'd have to double his home run output and almost quadruple his doubles output to finish with those numbers this season. Which maybe means we've seen the worst he will ever be and that it's only up from here.

I hope.

With PTR you can technically justify any move that cuts cost.

Personally I'd like to see him become their primary MI backup next year and see if regains anything in that role. He'd get a decent amount of playing time covering 3B/SS/2B and then they also increase the chances of being able to make him part of a trade for something decent.
