Here was the source article:

http://www.chicagonow.com/loxas-factor/2013/10/cardinals-calling-about-starlin-castro/

What I’ve heard is the Cubs would want a package to center around Martinez, Shelby Miller or Tyrell Jenkins and possibly a shortstop. Supposedly the Cards didn’t exactly hang up the phone, I'm told.

So the "I'm told" is really just out there to send a message to other Castro suitors that the market is real and they have to expect to trade a lot for him?

if the cardinals want him that probably means we should keep him

You're looking at this the wrong way. If we fill in the Cardinals' last hole, they can win the next four WS and then finally fall to complacency in 2018 when our window is opening.

How in the [expletive] is Jenkins comparable to Miller and Martinez??

Haha. Exactly what I was thinking.

Is it Miller or Martinez or Jenkins and a position prospect?

The positional prospect is a SS and the Cardinals have no good SS prospects (this particular rumor seemed to suggest Peter Kozma as a placeholder before Javier Baez was ready).

I seriously would let them take my 10% down payment and walk away. I will not buy season tickets for a team that acquires Pete Kozma on purpose.

This really comes down to whether you think Castro is an asset at SS defensively or not - at least for me. I don't see him ever being a good enough hitter to play anywhere else but 2b (I guess that is an option). I would probably make the deal (obviously for the good return).

What about Wong instead of Kozma? Obviously you would have to expect lesser pitching prospects in return and possibly shift Barney to SS until Baez is ready.

Im not a fan of Castro, if he maxs his talent, he's E Renteria, last year was his floor. His salary is no longer an asset, yet his age is. Martinez and Wong Id jump on.

So, if Castro maxes his talent, he's Starlin Castro 2010-2012? Interesting.

Edgar Renteria had five seasons better than Castro 2010-2012, and including one where he doubled Castro's best fWAR.

Kolten Wong is 6.5 months younger than Castro, can't play SS and hit like Josh Vitters at the major league level this season.

Also he gets picked off to end World Series games. Pass.

How many seasons did he have that were worse? Did UK say if Castro maxes out his talent he'll put up nothing but Renteria's best years?

Yes, what you likely seen from Castro his 1st 3 years is his likely ceiling. His approach will restrict him from going above that. Is it worth 10 mil a year to find out with Baez on the way and prospects in return whether last year was the fluke? Hell, will Castro even stick at SS or lose much of his value at 2nd or 3rd.

Id rather go with the cost effective prospects.

I would not ask Wong to play SS, Barney would be the stopgap there. Judging Wong based on his small sample in his 1st call-up is idiotic compared his minor league stats.

I made no mention of best years, I dont see Castro having any 6 war seasons & tI dont see Castro going above and beyond what he did prior to last year. It sucks to say I don't predict much progression from a 22yo but his regression of already bad habits at the plate were frightening.
