Did the ball hit a bird and ricochet?

No, but it's a crazy optical illusion caused by those criss-crossing bars beyond the fence.

Yet plenty of pitchers catch comebackers. It depends upon the speed obviously.

Something does look askew with the flight path of the ball. Could just be a missing frame in the gif or something.

I'm gonna submit that it's real for one main reason: Why would anyone go to the trouble to fake that?

Why would anyone go to the trouble of faking most of the [expletive] that's faked on the internet?

It looks like the ball slows down when it passes his head before speeding back up.

Aside from the stop-motion effect after it passes his head, what bothers me is the trajectory of the ball as it enters the frame. It appears that it enters the frame on a slightly downward plane. If a ball was elevated enough to be at the height of his head it should still be rising.

Nope. Saw it replayed on WGN before a commercial break a couple weeks go. Surprised I'm the first to say it.

That's gotta be fake.

Got it from here:

Still think it's fake; guys getting drilled in the head usually don't even have time to react, yet he has time for a reaction like that and it's that close to him?

The background is left field, which means it was taken from in front of him down the first base line, and that means by the time you can see the ball in this picture it's already past him.

WGN is a cheapass house of lies.

Bonus points for that being the game tying run going home as that happens
