His handling of the bullpen hasn't been good - but he's also had to deal with 2 fire sales - which if hadn't occurred would've had a better record.

The longer term approach mindset says the fire sale had to happen to restock. At the end of the day - it's a business and he shouldn't be shocked if he's let go at the end of this year.

I will be shocked if he's fired.

There are no good ways to manage a bad bullpen, and few bad ways to manage a good one.

I'm sure the next guy would be just as good as Sveum, but I don't want to be one of those teams that just cycles through managers with another round of "This guy is totally going to teach our players fundamentals and how to play the right way." I'd like to be better than that as an organization.

You know that's not true.

I completely know that it is true.

That's silly, but not funny. I'll say no more.

I would say that there are no good ways to manage an abysmal bullpen and very few ways to mismanage a spectacular one, but I think this year's pen falls somewhere in the middle (bad, but not abysmal).

We are 29th in bullpen fWAR (for the 2nd year in a row), ahead of only the Astros.

I seriously doubt that there was a bullpen usage pattern that could have been in place that would have made a noticeable difference.

Theo's looking old.

Seriously. I was saying that very thing to a friend of mine the other day. He must be aging in Obama years.

He knows people that know things type rumors or he knows how to read teh internets type rumors? He's not likely to win us any more games than Sveum will, but none of them would, other than Maddon. But I can easily see Giraradi wanting to jump ship. The Yankees are a mess moving forward. And with the lack of FA available over the foreseeable future, they're going to have to begin relying on a farm system that was considered average and took steps backwards this past season.

Pretty sure you're more in the know than your friend.

I can't see an established manager wanting to come to the Cubs. That'd be one heckuva sell job.

Yeah, but Girardi has ties to the area and may be sick of NYC. He's a guy who it would make sense for. Somebody like Maddon or Freddi Gonzales, yeah, those would be much tougher sells.

Why wouldn't someone like Girardi want to come to the Cubs. The bar has been set extremely low for the past 2 seasons, so any kind of improvement will make you a hero. Then you have the uber-prospects coming up in 2015 and the possibility of increased payroll. As long as you get a multi-year contract, I can't see any downside.

Because we're terrible now, don't seem likely to do what it takes to be not terrible next season, and other teams in our division have prospects, too.

If I'm a manager who needs to break into big-league managing, I take the job. If I'm an established, in-demand guy, then I wait to be the guy who gets fired after Sveum.

He's won a World Series on the biggest stage in baseball. Now he's going to be happy to take over a developmental project and receive accolades for taking a club from 95 losses to 80?

I'm having difficulty believing Girardi would do that.

Personally, I can't see Girardi staying with the Yanks. They've got 100 mill invested in Teixeira, CC, A-Rod, Wells, Soriano, Ichiro, and Jeter(once he exercises his option). They've got Gardner, Nova, and Robertson in arb around another 10 mill or so. That's it. Their system took a step backwards and is below average at best. They need to replace Mo, Hughes, Pettitte, Kuroda, Granderson, and Cano JUST to get back to being an old, overachieving low 80's win team. And do it while trying very hard not to go over the luxury tax AGAIN, since its costing them so much in penalties at this point. They need a C, a 2B, a reasonable backup for Jeter, same with A-Rod, a couple of OFers, 3 starting pitchers, and multiple bullpen arms. For 60-70 mill. And they need multiple stars out of that group. Even if they're willing to spend 200 mill- I still don 't see them as a playoff team and they're just getting older. I could see Girardi picking us over that, especially given his ties. The Nats on the other hand.....

Epstein did it (in Boston, not quite NY) and he's getting accolades while we're still losing 95 games. If Girardi could get us to 80 losses next year, he could run for Mayor.

Then there's that whole, you know, possibility (hopefully strong) of winning the World Series as the manager of the Chicago Cubs thing in subsequent years. People still generally have a positive outlook for the Cubs' future.

That said, I don't really want to waste money on a big name manager and I don't think Sveum needs to be fired, nor do I necessarily even think Girardi would be a better manager.

Yeah, I get that the manager who wins the WS with the Cubs is immortalized.

I just don't think next year is right in terms of timing, to become that guy. He would be walking in knowing there's a period of time that would be very frustrating. Possibly a lengthy period of time. Maybe he's OK with that -- or maybe Ricketts/Epstein would tell him something that tips the scales, such as new spending/focus on the major league level to cut down on the rebuilding time.
