So I was looking up defensive stats to see how badly Rizzo got robbed for the gold glove and see that he ended up -3.9 for defense (which would still be 3rd best in baseball after NAPOLI AND TRUMBO). How the hell did that happen and what the hell kind of scale is that?

3rd in UZR/150 after those two guys at 9.2.

That's the new defensive runs number Fangraphs put in a month or two ago, it requires no adjustment across positions, so that's why one of the best 1B rates -3.9, because they're already at the bottom of the spectrum. It makes it easier to compare players in offensive and defensive components, but makes adding up those components trickier. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/introducing-fangraphs-stats-offense-and-defense/

The more I thought about it, the more I thought it might be something along these lines. Interesting.

you can't be robbed for a gold glove - its an utterly meaningless award

I know which joke you're making, but it doesn't say "average" anywhere and I've never heard of the stat before.

So are you trying to make a joke about the missing A in BBIP, which I assume is BABIP, which does include the word average? Or is that just batted balls in play? I've never heard of the distance stat either, how is that measured? Would a liner caught by a 1B be measured at 90 ft with a shallow fly be measured where it's caught?

BBIP is just a lazy way for me to say batted balls in play. The distance measures are all means.

I use baseball heat maps. It's a really easy, user-friendly tool.

Will Rizzo ever hit lefties?

I'd rather have Cashner than Rizzo. Although, many will be outraged by such a statement.

omg, he had a bad day against one of the best LH starters in the league, he'll never get a hit ever

Well, to be fair, he does kinda suck against all lefties everywhere ever.

If we could keep the reactionary silliness to the game threads, that would probably help keep everyone a little more sane.

Look, he's literally a meatball. He's lucky he can even hit one type of pitcher, much less two. Just be thankful we get to witness this miracle of science.

OK, I agree there's an obvious amount of overreaction, but the flipside of people thinking it's absurd that the Cubs' 1B juuuuust might have the offensive splits of a platoon player seems a tad overwrought.

Jesus H Christ, it's one game. This is like people on Twitter last night saying the Padres won that trade because of one arbitrary good start from Cashner.

Chill.

When has Rizzo ever looked good vs lefties?

He has 1,200 at bats in the majors. And he has sucked vs lefties.

I like Rizzo, but he is completely overrated on this board.

.735 OPS.

Reactionary silliness is not limited to opinions that are 100% baseless.

His opinion seems mostly based on Rizzo not hitting lefties well, which is hardly baseless.

It's clear the Cubs are counting on him being pretty damn good, so it's a tad worrisome.

What's worrisome, that Rizzo went 0 for 4 today, as we reach the 0.6% mark of the season?

You can worry about Rizzo's ability to hit LHP all you want. Reviving a thread after months to reiterate that opinion because he took a couple bad K's against an elite LHP is pointless. "Will Rizzo ever hit lefties?" I dunno, but we're about as sure of it now as we were yesterday.

He's hit for .190 in his career vs lefties.

This is not some one game sample size. At what point is it okay to start worrying?

He's nearing 400 plate appearances vs lefties. This isn't just a blindless statement after today.

Today was just the inspiration for his post, but it's not like it isn't a worrisome trend.

Seeing as how Rizzo is considered a core piece going forward you don't think it's important to discuss?

I like Rizzo, but I am far from convinced like most of this board who were proclaiming trade rape when Cashner got hurt.

I bumped this thread, because it is the tracking thread for him.
