I think Arrieta might still be our best starter.

a definite possibility, but if you're matching up arms for the playoffs, do you run Arrieta or Lester out there against Kershaw?

Hammel, send Arrieta/Lester out there against lesser arms and increase our chance to win

I remember thinking about whether we should waste Prior against Pedro in the World Series.

I was trying to argue with a Sox fan yesterday (first problem) that in ranking the city's starters, Arrieta should be higher than Quintana, and in trying to argue that I found out that Arrieta's FIP (2.26) was second in all of baseball (min 150 innings) behind only Kershaw. Even xFIP (2.73) has him 5th in baseball, tied with Grienke and trailing only Kershaw, Felix Hernandez, Strasburg and Kluber.

Not much to add, I just didn't realize he was even that much better than his ERA, which the Sox fan was arguing was a fluke and unsustainable. I might even have an argument that Arrieta should be 3rd ahead of Shark, behind Lester and Sale.

Edit: The top 5 starters in the city by FIP

1. Arrieta 2.26

2. Sale 2.57

3. Lester 2.80

4. Quintana 2.81

5. Samardzija 3.20

3. Samardzija 3.07

4. Lester 3.10

5. Quintana 3.37

No might about it. Arrieta > Samardzija. I still think Jake is our best pitcher.

ETA: Didn't see David already said the same about Jake being our best starter. I agree.

I don't know what is stupider, the seemingly random use of commas or the manner in which they present completely [expletive] made-up numbers to two decimal places. Excepting, of course, the contribution of Jon Lester, which is apparently far more difficult to predict/quantify than that of "Cubs, Being, Cubs".

IDK where to even begin...

Lol, did they try to explain that?

Saw this live. The host (Jay Whatshisname) was laughing and almost apologetic for having to sort through that graphic.

omg hahahahahha

i heard silvy bring this up yesterday (something about "cubs by the numbers") and wilbon started ranting about how stupid it was and i assumed they somehow had actual legitimate stats up and was pissed at how much of a meatball wilbon is

If you're going to shoehorn in some comedic editorial narrative tropes into a flimsy analytic vehicle, I prefer Daniel Tosh satirizing ESPN's Sports Science.

The pre-ST glow period is hitting early where I start to feel happy and generous to everybody who could potentially make the roster. Javy Baez? Decent defense and crazy power should carry you to at least a bit of value. Logan Watkins? Sure, I can live with you as a 6th infielder. Mike Olt? You could be a useful bench piece of used correctly. Junior Lake? Nah, I'm not going that far. Feel free to rot in Iowa, Junior Lake.

joe maddon should request a big raise if he's worth 16 wins by himself.

We should have used all of Lester's money to hire Mike Scioscia and Bruce Bochy as coaches to add another 10-15 wins.

Sounds like more tampering.

Beane probably initiated those discussions as part of a master plan to get Russell back in a tampering suit

Also, when Theo called to tell Hammel he was being traded, he told him he'd be the first call he'd get in free agency. Tampering.
