I do feel like fans have a more exaggerated sense of entitlement these days.

As opposed to...when?

It honestly seems like being a horrible, horrible fan is a time honored tradition, especially when it comes to screaming racial stuff.

I dunno, I hear a lot more, "I paid for my ticket, I can do what I want" nonsense now than I ever recall hearing when I was younger. Maybe was just less aware or it receiver less coverage or blah blah blah. Either way, whether it's gotten worse or not isn't really the point. The point it that buying a ticket isn't a free pass to comport yourself like a p.o.s. Unfortunately, a lot of fans don't feel that way.

Yeah, this is true, though I think it's always had at least that kind of undercurrent with too many fans.

i just don't understand why teams, time after time, when inbounding from their end with 3-4 second or less on the clock, throw the ball short and settle for a half-court prayer. it's so insufferably stupid.

oh nevermind he's a great guy

That's right, there's no in between.

that's right, there can only be one person in the wrong and it was clearly the fan so the end.

both smart and the fan can be a douche. i'll estimate an idiot fan has hurled racist slurs at black athletes oh maybe 27 million times in history. amazingly very few have gone into the stands to assault the idiot fan. so yeah, what smart did was stupid, regardless of what the guy said.

Smart had already fallen in the front row when the fan started talking, this wasn't a Ron Artest running into the stands situation. If more of those athletes were 6" from the fan saying the racial slur, they'd have done what Marcus Smart did or worse.

Why is the burden of self control on the 19-year old and not the 50-year old bigot? I mean, sure, it would have been helpful for his team if he didn't shove the guy, but his reaction wasn't ridiculous or out of line and I wouldn't consider it douche-like.

(Again, all this only if the fan used a racial slur. If he's using garden variety trash talk, Smart's reaction was horrible.)

can't the burden of self control be on both? are you trying to make it sound like I'm trying to defend the racist hill person or what?i don't get your angle here.

No, I'm not saying you're defending the bigot; I'm saying you're casually accepting racism by saying Smart should just ignore it. Apparently you're not the only one with that reaction in this thread, though.

I don't really care about what Smart did and think it's hilarious that a guy who did something racist got some negative consequence for it (if something racist did happen) but I don't really agree that saying Smart shouldn't have attacked the fan is casually accepting racism either. There are a lot of reasons why it was a bad idea to do what Smart did and doing something despite the numerous negative consequences for doing so can easily be defined as doing something stupid.

Whoa and I thought I liked being the most liberal liberal in the room!

well you've got your hands full today calling everyone who thinks maybe a basketball player shouldn't have gone into the stands to shove a guy a racist so good luck with that weirdo.

DJ Newbill scored penn states last 7 points, but he did it over a 12 minute period. Just some horrendous offense down the stretch, I wonder if Nunn starts from here on out

i think he and Hill both do. Cannot understand Groce's decision to sit Hill so much in the second half.

If the fan dropped the N bomb he should be banned from attending games. Smart should be suspended for shoving a fan. Both were stupid but Smart was more stupid because he's got millions on the line.

"both were stupid", yeah, sure. smart is a kid, and a black kid. what a bunch of [expletive] white racist [expletive], [expletive] off.

you openly say crazy [expletive] to kids younger than Smart on twitter. Have fun playing the internet race card. Weirdo.

The sad fact of the matter is that there are still millions of racist pieces of [expletive] in this country, and many of them attend sporting events. Should racism be accepted? Absolutely not. But opposing racism shouldn't entail athletes attacking fans who use racial slurs, especially when the verbal assault is intended to rile the player up. It's been said before, but if players went after every POS scumbag who dropped an epithet, it'd be chaos.

If the guy really used a racial slur, I'd like to have seen Smart lay the guy out. But that isn't solving the problem. If the fan really is racist, I'll bet he's feeling a lot better about what happened than he would have had Smart done nothing.

What would be better is for there to be a zero tolerance rule about using such language, where fans are ejected and banned from attending future games. Players attacking fans just feeds into it.

Absolutely, no questions asked automatic ejection if you're using racial slurs. My guess is that's probably the case at a lot of places.

saying crazy [expletive] and [expletive] with a kid on twitter and being an otherwise complete idiot is different than calling the kid a [expletive] and being a racist pile of [expletive], but it's all the race card to people like you. got called a [expletive]? race card. got shot by a crazy person who wouldn't leave you alone? race card. systematically killed, abused, and otherwise oppressed since before america was a thing? you better believe that's the race card. you better sit there with a smile on your face and take what america gives you because that's the american way for people like you. now, who wants to play the race card?

So the dude is saying he called him a 'piece of crap'.

Presumably other fans that were near the guy could refute his claim if he did yell something racist?

the possibility that he didn't say the n-word is immaterial, white people have already said it's ok that Orr said it because it's the american way and black people are uppity.

It's the American way? Black people are uppity? Which normal white people said anything Orr did was ok? I'm sure you can find plenty of people like that hiding behind twitter, you would know.

nah, combination of laziness and not wanting to go back there

if all Orr did was just call him a piece of crap, then Marcus Smart has emotional issues.

I'm also starting to think that this Orr guy is like the resident dude who was hit by a car when he was younger and hangs around the basketball court, sweeping up and stuff, and the students ask him about the weather because he always carries a weather radio and talks about the weather.

SFChief wrote: Hard to believe the guy made a racial slur.

Come on, he's watching college basketball at Texas Tech where most of "his" team is black too.

That's just the obvious rebuttal to deflect the attention from the OSU player.

They are both at fault, but the player should be accustom to jackhole fans.

This PC crap needs to just go away. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING that a fan (heckler) can say (including any racial slur) that would justify a player running into the crowd and pushing/punching/whatever said fan. Nothing!!!! Come on people. When are we going to stop using these built in excuses to justify bad behavior?

What if the fan said your mother is a fat, dirty #$$%#@ [insert explicit of choice]? Does that justify a phyiscal response? Or does the race of the player matter for that one too?

Maybe a comic should simply punch the heckler in the crowd too? Yeah, that would make sense. ohlord

Why assume the fan said anything offensive.

I am sure JJ and Al Sharpton will ride to the rescue and play the race card on this one...
