I don't understand why people are so worked up over playing for one run in the 8th inning.

I prefer the three chances to score as opposed to two myself.

It's not quite that simple, since a fly ball or ground ball don't score a run in the three chances scenario.

I doubt that bunting there is much worse, if at all, than swinging away in terms of expectancy.

As pointed out, the odds of scoring after the bunt vs. before are miniscule.

Bill 'Rock' Schroeder from the Brewers broadcast team rivals Hawk Harrelson in homerism. Man is he a [expletive] blast to listen to when bad things happen to the Brewers.

He's bad, but he's not even close to Hawk bad

That's assuming the bunt is successful. You have to take into account the odds of the player failing to get the bunt down and getting himself out for nothing, vs. the defense botching the bunt and letting him on base.

Fangraphs has the bunt adding .1% win expectancy.

At least they are pinch hitting for Lillibridge.

a successful bunt added 0.1% to the win expectancy. there were other negative possibilities - pop out, bad bunt that results in the runner being thrown out at third, strike out (and of course there's the smaller chance of a more positive outcome, like fielder's choice with runner safe at third, or a throwing error on the bunt allowing the baserunner to score.

i think the move is probably a net negative when you take into account the other possibilities, but i don't think it's an egregiously bad call to bunt there.

There's nothing better than listening to Hawk when bad things happen to the Sox...when crickets aren't chirping
