@injuryexpert: Casey Close, Aiken's agent, has sent him to three different top docs who have all cleared his arm to pitch immediately.

Are they top docs in @injuryexpert's mind or a real person?

One of them was Andrews.

Well then.

But it was Erin.

Callis with a good summary of the situation: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/hou/time-running-out-for-astros-to-sign-no-1-overall-pick-brady-aiken?ymd=20140715&content_id=84829724

Multiple baseball sources contacted by MLB.com had a difficult time imagining that MLB would consent to granting Aiken free agency. If he did, estimates on the contract he might receive on the open market started at $25 million to $30 million. When four first-rounders became free agents after teams improperly tendered them contracts in 1996, Matt White ($10.2 million) and Travis Lee ($10 million) received five times the bonus of No. 1 overall pick Kris Benson ($2 million).

As of Tuesday evening, no further talks between Aiken and the Astros have been scheduled. Luhnow expressed hope that his club still would sign Aiken and Nix, though he admitted he didn't know if that would happen.

I can't see him going to UCLA, if he fails to sign my guess is he goes and plays independent ball somewhere and re-enters the draft next year.

Goes to show what a terrible job MLB did when they let a guy like Crane become an owner.

Huh?

He's had to pay huge fines for among other things, not hiring blacks because, "you can't fire them" and women because they have babies. His company has provided bribes and kick backs to defense contractors. They let him buy the team so they could move them to the AL.

How does this situation "go to show you" anything about that?

Probably because it's another thing that could have been avoided if the owner wasn't a huge dick. I mean, if the most renowned living TJS surgeon says you're fine, then you're probably fine and the team trying to sign you should stop trying to lowball you so they can sign another guy too. It may be the GM doing this in particular, but the tone is set from the top down.

unlike the rest of MLB owners?

Lets just say he won't be featured on Undercover Boss this year.

I want to see him named a FA and then have the Astros sign him for more than slot and [expletive] draft slotting forever.

Well, if Aiken and Nix are free agents, I want the Cubs to sign them but whatever.

Why on earth would he be granted free agency? Where did that dumbness come from?

I've been wondering that myself. However, there is precedent, Barret Loux:

Heading into the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, Loux was seen as a potential late-first round pick.[5] Surprising many, the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Loux with the sixth overall selection, agreeing to a pre-draft deal with Loux with a $2 million signing bonus.[14] However, Loux failed his physical with the Diamondbacks due to a torn labrum and elbow damage that doctors felt might require ligament-replacement surgery in the future.[14][15] As a result, the Diamondbacks did not offer Loux a contract, as the franchise chose to take advantage of compensation rules that instead would grant them the seventh overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft if they did not sign Loux.[16]

Though unsigned draft picks typically cannot begin their professional careers until the next season, MLB declared Loux a free agent in an unprecedented move.[17][18] After throwing for scouts,[19] Loux signed a contract with the Texas Rangers, receiving a signing bonus of $312,000.[20] In an attempt to prevent this situation from happening again, the new collective bargaining agreement negotiated that winter by MLB and the MLB Players Association added clauses that included mandatory physicals for all top 200 prospects prior to the draft, and a rule that makes all future draft picks who fail a physical and do not receive an offer of at least 40 percent of the assigned value for that pick are to become free agents, with the team facing a reduction in the amount of money they can spend on their draft picks.[21]

Forgot to finish:

While Aiken is only in high school and can go to college, it should be noted that Loux was only a Junior and still had eligibility.

Isn't that the point? That they are offering the minimum to get around the rules?

I think that's what the adviser is arguing, that they are offering the bare minimum to get around the rule, and therefore are not negotiating in good faith.

Also, it's not like with Appel, where he can return to school and then re-enter the draft the next year and maybe get drafted higher. Aiken would have to wait a couple years if he goes to college.

Although I guess he could go and play for an independent team for a year.

Why do people keep saying he can't go to college? He can go to any JC he wants and be eligible again next year. No, he can't go to UCLA, but he can go to college.

Because college and JC are two different things.

Sean Newcomb signs with the Angels. Only two first rounders remain unsigned - Brady Aiken and Eric Fedde. The deadline is less than six hours away.

Less than an hour to go.

Nationals second rounder Andrew Suarez announced he's returning to Miami, we'll see what that does to Fedde's slot.
