Dylan Cease, ranked 10th by Keith Law skipped NHSI because of a sore elbow. An MRI revealed he has a small tear of the UCL and he might need TJS. He's a Vanderbilt commit.

Grab him in the 2nd or 3rd and overslot him if he falls.

Way tougher to be able to pull that off with the new CBA. I'd be more interested in him in the 11th round.

Depends on what we do in the 1st. If we are really set on taking a bat to avoid the risk associated with a pitcher at #4, we may be able to get the bat at under slot value this season. If we could then pick up Cease in the second/third with the difference, it would be pretty cool.

im so terrified of drafting high school pitchers because they might get injured that i want to tailor my draft around drafting a high school pitcher that's already injured. great plan

nabbing an injured upside guy in the 2nd is way different than making sure to get the right guy at the top of the first round. I wouldn't mind another Pierce Johnson situation. It's like getting a Pierce Johnson vs. a Rob Zystryzny.

yeah but what im replying to is "why dont we avoid drafting a hs pitcher early in the first round, because they get hurt. The we overdraft a hitter that doesn't belong there, then draft a hs pitcher who's already injured."

I'm saying if we're going to overdraft a hitter anyway, we may be able to save some slot money to spend elsewhere.

Raisin's strategy is perfect. Mainly because you may or may not have Cease available when your 2nd rounder comes up. Tim is correct in thinking that if we took a bat at 4, it's likely to be able to be under slotted. Whether its the BPA on our board or not, the consensus seems like pitching is going to occupy the entire top 5 or so.

So, if you DO go bat at pick 4 and under slot, you'd need to hedge your bets on multiple high upside arms in rounds 11-15 and have different scenarios around to either sign the one high prices guy that's going to cost 2 mill or so. Or spread it out over 2-3 others that may be 4-5 round talents that fell due to wanting 600k+ each.

I'd gladly just take any of Rodon, Aiken, Kolek, Beede, Hoffman, or maybe even Holmes at 4 right now personally. Not even necessarily to bank on as a long term answer, in the case of the HS guys, but to trade them for the established guy we need anyway. In that scenario, all you're doing is banking on the guy holding up one year before trading him, instead of thinking he's going to hold up long term.

I will be severely disappointed if we ever go major underslot with a top-5 pick.

Then you may want to take a pitcher this year.

Never!

Then you may want to give a guy money he's not worth.

I say underslot this year since that is the way the draft presents itself, and then just add a tank year on to the back end of the rebuild to get another shot at the top 5 pick.

I prefer waiting til we're a perennial 90 win team, then giving everyone a year off and recouping it then.

I don't like that either.

Well then you better clone a hitter worthy of getting slot at 4.

Draft someone who won't sign and take the fifth pick next year.

That's honestly not a terrible idea if they're not enamored with anybody at that slot this year. It'll cost them a bunch of slot money, but if they like some of the guys that will be eligible next year it could work out. The uncertainty of players draft to draft makes that a huge risk though.

I don't see Alex Jackson as such a horrific option at #4 if you really don't want to take a pitcher that it's worth punting on this draft or underslotting some college hitter or something.

the odds that kolek (or any elite HS pitcher) stays healthy and develops is be lower than the odds that a HS hitter also develop. I'd rather swing for the fences

Have opinions on the idea sure, but it's not realistic.

Picking a HS pitcher that your scouting loves, at #4 is also a way to end up with a damn good pitcher. I trust this FO will pick someone special with their forth pick.

“@KendallRogersPG: Tyler Kolek finishes w/ 98 FB. Showed a nasty 81 mph slider in fifth. Five innings complete game, 13 Ks.
