Most of Cedeno's value is in him being a decent defensive SS, a position he should never play on a Cubs team that has Castro and Barney. Go get the best hitter you can that is also passable at 2B and/or 3B.

Manager Dale Sveum acknowledged Bogusevic had a good camp, but the job was Sappelt's to lose.

"The writing on the way (was) 'Sapp' was going to be on the team," Sveum said.

I think Sullivan should have tried to use another quote.

At least Dale didn't call him "Sappy"

Would that be any worse than him calling himself Sappy?

Sadly, His twitter handle is SappySappelt.

Yes, I know that.

I still say that one of the biggest mistakes this offseason was not going after Keppinger.

Nah, we're likely looking for a band-aid until Ian Stewart's ready. If anything. we'll be looking for a Ramon Martinez/Rey Ordonez/Andres Blanco. So Ronny Cedeno sounds about right.

How does that have anything to do with not getting Keppinger being a mistake (assuming he was willing to sign here for a reasonable amount).

Depends on the reasonable amount. Starlin Castro has SS for the long term, unless he's moved to 3rd by Baez. The organization seems to love Barney, and I can't imagine anyone giving up enough to make him worth moving in their eyes. In the short term, Stewart will still likely be given the opportunity to win or lose the 3rd base job when he's ready. Beyong that, Vitters needs to be given that shot next Spring at the latest, unless they opt to move him to OF. Keppinger would be a utility guy, and while 3/12 was a great price for him, the front office is a frugal one, and they seem just as happy pulling Brent Lillibridges and Luis Valbuenas off the scrap heap to fill those spots. Remember, Jeff keppinger's 31 years old, and his road to the contract he was given is very simlar to that of Aaron Miles.

At least you know what you have in Keppinger. He certainly can fill the 3B job (or platoon) until someone is ready to take over permanently. As you mentioned, he's a solid utilty player and even has very limited experience at 1B. Finally, his biggest selling point to this FO is the fact that he might be tradable to a desperate team at the deadline.

Well...no.

You certainly have a better idea of what to expect from Keppinger than Stewart/Valbuena/Lillibridge.

We were in on Keppinger. My guess is we didn't want to go 3 years on him. Who knows though? I agree he'd have been a solid addition. As it stands, Levine says there's a 95% chance we add someone off the waiver wire this next week. Cedeno, hall, Figgins, Garland? I guess it'd be one from that group. Garland makes little sense, unless we think he's a better 6th starter than Rusin for the beginning of yhe season. Cedeno is the best player of the group, but he plays a position he'd get no time at whatsoever. Figgins and Hall are both versatile, but suck. However, after seeing Sveums' comment, my guess is we pick up Figgins.

I can't help but notice Brett Jackson hasn't been cut.

I still have this weird feeling we might trade DeJesus or Soriano and give Jackson the job out of nowhere.

Jackson isn't healthy. If anything, they may want him to just get a few at bats before going back. I think I read he may still be a week away.

He could get healthy and get some at-bats in the minor league camp just as easily.

I think the coaches/FO might have some familiarity with Hall. Svuem was with Milwaukee when he was there and I think Theo was the GM of the Red Sox when they signed or traded for him. Whether that's good or bad, idk.

Brett Jackson has resumed throwing. Have there been any other updates regarding the condition of his shoulder? I recall reading that is hasn't affected his ability to swing, but I've heard/read little else.

Baker has been diagnosed with a "right elbow strain" and will be shut down for a month.

So, mid-to-late June at the earliest, I would think, for his debut.

Ian Stewart will take two more weeks off before beginning a rehab stint.

Well, the Baker thing sucks. Hopefully we get him on another one year deal next season if he finishes up the year healthy.

Meh. At that point he'll be 32 with consecutive seasons of elbow problems. I'd rather just not throw good money after bad on this one.

Shrug it off and move on. Sometimes you get Baker, sometimes you get Maholm.

So what does the roster look like now? The 25-man is mostly set, right?

Soriano/DeJesus/Schierholtz (Hairston, Sappelt)

Valbuena/Castro/Barney/Rizzo (Lillibridge, ????)

Castillo (Navarro)

Samardzija/Jackson/Wood/Feldman/Villanueva

Marmol/Fujikawa/Russell/Camp/Rondon/Bowden/?????

15-day DL: Stewart, Garza

60-day DL: Baker, Vizcaino

The last bench spot is probably Clevenger. There's a couple guys still in camp for the last bullpen spot, but Takahashi has the inside edge because he's a lefty.
