Also, how the hell does a 16 y/o get to be 6'4 and 200 lbs? That blows my mind.

Ehh... I wasn't as tall, but I was already over 200 lbs then. I was 6' 215 by that age. It reminds me of my buddy who was about the same size as Eloy at that age, but still the same size now 12 years later.

I also found that really unexpected.

The only way that can make sense is if they wanted Guerrier. Guerrier was a really effective relief workhorse for many years in the AL, so I wonder if Theo kind of developed a respect for him and he still has hopes for Guerrier to be or to become again a safe strike-throwing reliever.

Perhaps the Cubs scouts think he's coming back, or can be effective again with what he's got now.

I assume that they want an experience strike-throwing type veteran. Camp was supposed to be that guy, they must think Guerrier might take that role.

Obviously giving away slot money to save $0.5M in payroll was not the motivation. The motivation must have been some desire to get Guerrier.

Why would you think the motivation would be to acquire a crappy reliever rather than a cheap owner saving more money?

How about a "tapped out owner" trying to save money. There's way too much evidence that the Ricketts family hasn't been cheap at all...

@JesseSanchezMLB: #Cubs have added another int'l prospect: Catcher Johan Matos for $270K. Overall, they've added 4 teens & remain favorites for Eloy Jimenez.

Cubs have signed Eloy Jimenez; $2.8 million and a $250,000 college scholarship according to Jesse Sanchez.

#Cubs have agreed to a $2.8 million deal & a $250,000 college scholarship with @MLB's Top Prospect Eloy Jimenez. He's now at team's academy.

That would put them severely over which makes no sense. Why add bonus pool money then go over?

Brett Taylor is speculating that some of the signings may not be official and they can still add pool money. If not, and they traded for pool money yesterday just to blow it up today, I will have lost all faith in our FO.

I wonder how much of an effect the new facility in the DR had on influencing Jimenez's decision.

Yeah, Brett's specualtion looks right. Sanchez had "agreed," not "signed."

Yeah, Brett's specualtion looks right. Sanchez had "agreed," not "signed."

Still puts them in a bad situation in trade talks when teams know they have over extended themselves without the extra bonus pool money. Seems like they could get squeezed into a bad deal now.

WHY DIDN'T THEY THINK OF THAT!?!

I hope like hell they don't trade anyone with any value just so they can be under the dollar figure. I'd rather they suck it up and deal with it next year or whatever the penalty is.

These kids are important gets, but the odds of them contributing anything are pretty slim.

Everyone knew the Rangers, Red Sox and Cubs had overextended themselves last week. Nothing has changed with this report.

Maybe the plan is to sign everyone, thereby reducing the value of all the other teams' slot dollars to nothing. Theo found the loophole!

I could be down with that plan if he hadn't already given up Torreyes and Clevenger.

I'm happy to get Jimenez obviously. But trading for money, if we knew we were going over anyway is a stupid allocation of resources. So hopefully we've got more deals to announce. If not, I hope thry do this up right and spend another 2-3 mill, at least. Raisin, Craig(anyone else)-you guys know if our allocation next year is tradeable, if we go over this year? I'm guessing yes, but don't know for sure......We could take the exact opposite approach next year, sell it off for players or prospects, which would also be interesting.

New name has entered the mix: Cuban RHP Leandro Linares,19, is free to sign with big league club & falls under new int'l signing guidelines.

Would be super interested if he's actually good. Would be nice to get someone a little more advanced but still young.

It's assumed next year's allocation is tradeable but the rules haven't been set.

Maybe its semantics, to keep the Cubs from getting in the red? Doubtful, in my opinion. If we don't get him, it'll suck, but I'm very happy with what we've done so far, and it'd leave us money to go get more. Whatever.

6'4 200 really isn't that outrageous for a 16 yo. My son's two best friends are 6'6 215 (he turned 16 in May) and 6'5 285 (he turned 16 in March). It's probably a good thing, my son just turned 17 and is 5'6 145.
