I was upset the Browns let Heckert go, but it looks Haslam was going to make a big push for Saban or Chip Kelly all along. If he can get Saban I'll be pretty impressed.

he has about as much chance at saban as the cavs have at getting lebron back.

This is probably a bad time to mention that I don't think it's too far fetched that the cavs will get LeBron back.

If I had to guess:

Arizona- Andy Reid

Cleveland- Chip Kelly

Buffalo- Lovie Smith

Philadelphia- Greg Roman

Chicago- Mike McCoy

Kansas City- Kyle Shanahan? - really not sure what they're going to do if not Reid.

San Diego- Bruce Arians

it seems like mccoy is the flavor of the week, but i don't know what he hangs his hat on. so he's flexible, great, he does a few things well, but what does he do that's great? i have confidence in emery to do his due diligence in regards to analysis, but clements has a track record for making quarterbacks.

hire clements and you're hiring a guy who can develop jay, but not only that, he can develop jay's successor. that's what he does great and that's very translatable to winning.

I'm incredibly intrigued by the idea of Chip Kelly in the NFL. I'd be curious to see how much he changes his offensive style or, if he doesn't change it much, if his high-speed spread option style can work in the NFL.

I also wouldn't completely discount the idea of Saban to Cleveland. Saban has shown he has no problems moving around and if Cleveland offers enough money (the $10 mil/year number is impressive) and gives him a like-minded GM (Lombardi?), I could see him considering the jump. As to why he'd leave a cushy situation like Alabama: the challenge. Like any really good coach, he's a proud man who probably feels he can succeed in the right situation in the NFL. Having another Belichick-type guy as his GM might give him that assurance.

I'm not saying it's happen by any means, just that it's not quite as silly an idea as it seems on its face.

Who has Clements developed other than Rodgers? Serious question, I honestly don't know who else he's developed. He's clearly done a very good job with Rodgers, but if he's it, I'm not sure I'd assume Clements can develop any QB. That said, I'm not sure Cutler needs development as much as he needs an offensive line - get him that and he'll probably immediately become 10x better.

he was a crap pro coach anyway

Saban? The results definitely weren't there, but I think there's a real chance it was largely because he and the Dolphins GM at the time weren't on the same page in bringing in his type of players. Were I a Cleveland fan, I'd be pretty uncomfortable giving him the kind of contract that's been rumored, but I'm not sure there's enough data to definitely say he sucks as an NFL coach.

Elvis Grbac, Kordell Stewart, and Tommy Maddox all reached Pro Bowls under his tutelage(from 2000-2002). Not sure you can call that development per se, as though guys weren't model QBs outside of those years they had success, but it means something I guess. Looks like he got decent production out of Kelly Holcomb in Buffalo as OC in 2005 as well.

Hope he is more than just a really good QB coach though. He only has three years of OC experience to judge him on.

Hm, I'm not sure I'd consider a guy who developed some pretty good QBs and one elite QB as a shoe-in to be great at developing guys. In all honesty, I'm not sure there's much difference between Clements and McCoy. I like both, but both have real questions too.

Aaron Rodgers is like the best ever, not just elite.

Reid and KC had a 9 hour interview today? Has to be a Chiefs lean at this point.

@AdamSchefter

Andy Reid did not fly to Arizona last night as scheduled.

Interesting. Wonder if it's because the meeting took longer than expected and it was too late to fly out or if he's about to be hired in KC?

From @mortreport and me: Chiefs on verge of a deal with Andy Reid. One source said “the major issues have been discussed and agreed upon.”

Well, that answers my question. Great hire by the Chiefs.

Lovie to interview with the Bills this weekend.

Lovie Smith would be such a Bills hire. I'm not saying its necessarily a bad fit, its just a boring vanilla coach joining a boring vanilla team.

Edit: I wonder if any interviews he has are half-legit option and half Rooney rule.

It would kill the Rooney requirements, true, but it seems like Lovie is pretty respected by most other teams out there. I imagine there's legitimate interest.

I would assume Lovie's interviews are for legit reasons.

Lovie isn't nearly the boring hire that Jauron was. At least with Lovie you are hiring a guy whose entire career is based around creating turnovers on defense. Jauron's defense was about stuffing the run up the middle.
