Awesome. As for trading Shark for Gyorko, Kelly, and Portillo? Not enough for me. Wouldn't trade him for Headley either. That said, now I'd try to find a package of minor leaguers TO trade for him. Just don't think Pads are ready to go down that road yet.

Would Gyorko/Kelly/Portillo get it done for you guys? My instant reaction was no, but now I'm not as sure.

As with the hypothetical Castro deals, if you're trading Samardzija and you aren't getting back at least 1 young player with some MLB success under his belt, you've already lost.

Agreed. Maybin/Gyorko/Portillo or Kelly would be something I could possibly like, but if we made him available I'd think that we could find a team willing to give up a better package.

Monopolize all the pitchers then unload the Bakers and Feldmans of the world for Olt and Odorizzi respectively. Market inefficiency.

They are so [animal][expletive]ing smart when they want to be. I'm still a little nervous they'll do something like trade Soriano without getting an OF in return and be like "LOL DeJeus/Campana/Schierholtz!"

But I'm about 90% on board right now. This is *exactly* what needed to be done.

Makes me all "what could have been" had we gotten Anibal too.

Yeah, we ought to have a pretty good overall pitching staff with all these arms. Now get Bourn or have Theo work some 3B and CF magic and we could actually sniff the playoffs this season

I'm giddy. I'm a little anxious to see if they plan on moving one of Garza or Samardzija now.

Some sort of move has to be coming, even a little one like cutting Clevenger/Raley/Rusin/etc., since we are at 43 on the 40-man. Hopefully Jed/Theo are finalizing the compounds of their trade rape drugs.

All of the proposed trades for Garza, Marmol, and Shark are involving mutliple prospects... Do we have 40 man space for that? I have no deal in mind but it would seem these deals would haved to be for low level guys or closer to straight up trades....

Very excited about this. And I'm much happier to have E-Jax at this deal than I would have been outspending the Tigers for Anibal.

Really happy happy with the moves we've made but I can't help but think about the rotation that could have been.

Sanchez/Garza/Samardzija/Jackson/Baker/Feldman/Wood......lacks a true ace but 1-5 are all middle to top of the rotation guys.

The Iron Sheik ‏@the_ironsheik

the Edwin Jackson not the Michael Jackson but we see what happen if he ready other wise the Chicago make dumb [expletive] mistake

Personally, I think both would've been super duper awesome.

If that was ever really an option, sure.

Getting 4 of the top 15 SP this offseason, when so many teams had needs(many multiple) is phenomenal work. Maybe Texas panics now and gives us a decent offer for Garza? Would you deal him straight up for Olt, right now?

If you make some inferences based on Kaplan's reports, it was.

ABTY has also said as much.

Given the uncertainty and our gaping hole there, I'm leaning towards yes.

GRB, I know you're reading this apparently. Because I was reading to see if you were reading this. Or something.

Anyway, two things:

1) You guys really need to look at how many losses the Cubs racked up with sub-replacement starting pitching last season. Not just below-average. Sub-replacement.

2) I'm trying to WAG a percentage chance that the Cubs finish ahead of the Cardinals in the standings next year. I'm thinking like 10-20%.

Re: Bourn - can someone tell me why he's not Juan Pierre? I don't mean that in a snarky way, I'm just trying to understand his value.

Different offensive environment. Plus Bourn is better at being that guy. And he's a better fielder.

But, to be honest, even 2005 Juan Pierre would be a welcome addition on this roster.

And we didn't give up any of our top prospects for Michael Bourn.

Maybe. The team that signs Bourn gives up a draft pick. In the Cubs case it's a second round pick since the first is protected.
