To me, its the biggest mistake by the FO, so far, in not dealing him already. But, if he pitches well, its possible to get a solid return at the deadline or at least the comp pick, if he walks. If we miss on Edwin though and Garza stays healthy, if he'd take 5/75 without a NTC, its not a bad thing for us.......

Yeah, I don't know where someone is getting $100m...I don't see how Garza beats Anibal's contract. While Garza has the one good season (which was preceded by a bad season), hes pretty much been a 3 fWAR pitcher and has recent elbow issues. Sanchez (who hit FA one year younger than Garza), just came off 3 consecutive 30+ start seasons where he averaged 4 fWAR.

To me, Jackson likely comes in around half the price of Garza on an extension. I'd rather have Jackson and the package of prospects you can get for Garza(assuming he's healthy) and the extra flexibility to go get an actual ace as well.

and who is that "actual ace" that you're going to get/sign?

David Price.

Judging by what they got for a year and an option of 30 year old James Shields, I can't even begin to think about the, er, price.

Theo Epstein > Dayton Moore

True, but not enough so to acquire a bonified 27 year old ace for anything less than what they got for Shields, who's older, not nearly as good, and has less service time unless he had an unfortunate run in with a table saw between now and when we try to get him.

Sanchez ended up in a situation where the currently frugal Cubs and his own team were the only two bidding on him. Maybe next year Boston, Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Rangers and White Sox will be looking to spend on starting pitching.

So say things work out for the best and we can trade half of our best prospects for Price:

Who is our #3 starter if we trade Garza and don't sign Jackson? Vizcaino? Wood? Loux?

Speaking of Jackson, in addition to Ken Rosenthal’s mention this morning that he didn’t think the Rangers were going to be the high bidder on Edwin Jackson, Danny Knobler jumps into the fray and adds: “[The Rangers are] thought to be interested in a shorter rather than longer-term deal with Jackson, who may find a better offer from the Cubs.” If the Cubs are the only team willing to go four years on Jackson – and I could get into a four-year deal if it isn’t too far north of $12 million per year – they might just get their man this time. Or not. You know how these things go …

Theo can crocodile mouth Dayton all he wants, but the Rays MO will remain the same: Ask for something completely and utterly ridiculous and hold to it until someone caves.

yep. and unbelievably Dayton gave it to them!

I think I would have liked to get Odorizzi-Myers more the Shields-Davis, at least where we are as a team.

BUT kc royals prospects > chi cubs prospects

Not really. I'd rather have Baez than anyone not named Wil Myers in KCs. After this trade their best prospect is Starling, who I'd slide in after Almora and Soler.

a bonified 27 year old ace

i really don't see why we should worry about the man's sexual proclivities. let's just get an ace, i couldn't care less whether he gets bonified in his spare time.

laughed way harder at that than I should've

I'd certainly be willing to take Yordano Ventura off their hands.

Me too, but would you trade one of our top prospects for him? I wouldn't, he could easily end up being a reliever.

Maybe the Royals are looking for someone like Barney to replace Johnny Giavotella at 2B since they're seemingly all in for 2013.

I think the plan is for Christian colon to slide over and play second. But, yeah I could see them liking Darwin.

The FO seems to be much more attached to Rizzo and much more willing to deal Castro. That's the only reason I put it that way. I think shark is here until he is in his free agent season, Then his pitching will dictate his future.

Have there been serious reports that the front office has looked into trading Starlin or have they just been Kaplan and Rogers blowing smoke? I could be forgetting, but I don't recall any serious smoke concerning a Starlin trade.

Just the typical"they'll listen on anyone" stuff. I think the only time his name has been attached to a rumor was with Justin Upton and it was purely speculative.

That's what I was thinking. I think I remember Kaplan or Rogers or somebody writing columns saying they should either trade or, at least, shop Starlin, but I don't recall anything actually sourced.

If further confirmation was needed, Phil Rogers:

While the Cubs are close to signing Carlos Villanueva -- not done yet, despite reports -- they're still in on Edwin Jackson. Want him too.

@Ken_Rosenthal

Sources: #Indians in talks with EJax as well as Swisher. Probably cannot sign both. #Cubs also strong on EJax. Should get at least 4 years.

Very interesting that we're in on 2 of the top remaining FA pitchers. With Villanuva, Feldman, Baker, and Garza, it could make for a very interesting July if we're not contending.
