Throwing in the mid 80s will do that to a guy. That said, I thought if you were added to the 40 man, you had to stick on it for a period of time. I know Rusin did, maybe it was based on when he was added though......

Has to do with being added right around Rule 5 time. AZPhil's site has the explanation on it somewhere, iirc.

Barney DLed, Gonzalez rostered, Whitenack removed from roster (presumably DFA/waived).

DFA.

Yeah, Sweeney is decent. I figured he'd catch on somewhere. Bogusevic and him are sadly much, much better at OF than Lillibridge, Gonzalez, or Maysonet are at IF.

No longer the offseason, but we signed Ryan Sweeney to a minor league deal.

Surprised he couldn't stick on some MLB roster. We now have like 7 useful MLB outfielders and 3 useful MLB infielders.

Which is why it has me wondering if they still have plans to trade Soriano in the near future.

Either way, this is the type of low risk move I love, certainly more than scraping middle relievers and utility infielders off the sidewalk for depth. And how is he only 28? He's like the 43 year woman on her 9th 35th birthday.

Should we start a "2013 Regular Season Minor Moves" thread?

Eh, I figure it will be all variations of Jason Berken and Miguel Socolovich for the next few months.

True. But I figure that way we have one to cover extensions and/or minor league call ups/trades across all MLB and a Clayton Kershaw extension, Wil Myers call up, etc. don't get their own thread.

I've always been a Ryan Sweeney fan. Good, low-cost signing. We're good on outfield depth, as someone said. Our infield depth is pretty putrid.

I'm posting from ignorance, and not meaning to be rude, but is there any particular reason why you like him? He doesn't seem to hit for much AVG, Power, or get on base in the majors (.280/.338/.378) or the minors (.290/.352/.404). I know it's a AAA depth signing, but he seems kind of bad even for that.

I mean he's at best a platoon player w/ a .750 ops vs RHP

He's .293/.347/.402 against righties in his career. Not a bad platoon guy in the event of Soriano or DeJesus getting traded.

Isn't that a really bad platoon split for an outfielder? I get it, it's a depth singing and he's not blocking anyone, I was just wondering if I was missing something greater.

This isn't the mid-1990s. A .700 OPS from an outfielder is perfectly acceptable.
Sorry, I seem to have been in a deep freeze for about 5 years, your new outfields frighten and confuse me.

A .700 OPS would have been good for 51st in the league last year amongst OF. Ahead of guys like Ichiro, Rasmus, Maybin, and Stubbs. That's perfectly fine for your 4/5 OF who isn't going to be playing everyday in the current run environment.

Yes, yes it is. I have not adjusted to the 'roid-free era. I was trying to make a reference as out of date as my perception (mid-1990's), but I may have done it poorly.

It's really more like the late 90s/early to mid 2000's, isn't it?

I think it started earlier than that, but it seems about right. Is there an official range for the steroid era?

I'd guess Late '80s w/ Conseco and McGwire were its earliest stars.

the beginning of the steroid era is whenever hank aaron started snorting deer semen or w/e so he could break the hr record
