Don't care for Porcello.Would love the get Smyly though. Hopefully Jed and Theo are looking into it. Wonder what it would take? Also, isn't he under control until 2016?

I read somewhere a couple of days ago that the Cubs called about Porcello, but "there wasn't a fit". If it was that the Cubs didn't have what the Tigers wanted, I have a tough time seeing a fit for Smyly.

Maybe they'd be willing to give up more for Smyly.

That doesn't seem to be the MO right now. They seem to be stockpiling prospects for that type of use further down the road, when adding a piece could put us over the top.

If Smyly were in his late 20s, early 30s, I'd agree with you that it's not their MO. However, Smyly is only 23 and has shown some level of success at the ML level. Swapping prospects for him would be very similar to the Rizzo/Cashner trade they made a year ago, which fits perfectly with their current MO.

Edwin Jackson apparently down to Cubs and Rangers according to some national reporter.

From a PSD insidery guy:

two teams with money to burn and have both been left at the altar this offseason, the Rangers have to be more willing and desperate to get nutty though

The Rangers also have the ability to move key prospects and players for pitchers if need be, so they won't necessarily be completely SOL if they miss out on Jackson. They can still move Andrus and/or Olt, which should be more than enough to get a comparable pitcher back. I know they tried to get Simmons from ATL for Olt and ATL wasn't having it, but they could probably pry one of their young pitchers away for Olt. Maybe Delgado or Teheran, probably.

Speaking of Bourn, has there been anything recently on him?

Was browsing PSD's thread on Jackson, and ABTY7, the guy with the sources it seems, posted this:

Just asked what an EJax signing would mean to the Cubs...answer:'Solid but hearing they may sign Bourn as well...'

And this:

Heard they're still poking around for a bat... Also just heard that they want Jackson because they plan to flip an arm for a bat and have had advanced talks with the Nats on Morse...

ABTY's the guy who kind of has general industry sources. It's not necessarily tied to Cubs directly, but he does an awesome job of relaying what the general "baseball insider" gossip is.

He also said some people think that the way they Cubs are acting is consistent with being worried about Garza's rehab.

Hmm, if they add Morse, it'd seem that Soriano gets dealt. Trading an arm for a bat? Marmol for Morse, maybe? Can't imagine we'd trade Travis Wood for him, nor do the Nats need him, for that matter. A lineup of Bourn/Barney/Rizzo/Morse/Castro/Castillo/Stewart/DeJesus, I guess? Rotation of Shark/Garza/EJax/Feldman/Baker. Not bad. Playoffs? I'd still say very, very doubtful personally. But you could find yourself in a position to add down the stretch and enhance it.

WTF'n F?

"Hi Oakland," he began. "My name is Hiroyuki Nakajima but you can call me Hero. I'm honored to be here today and very thankful for everyone coming today. Thank you very much Mr. Beane."

Later in Japanese, Nakajima said through an interpreter that Beane was "extremely sexy and cool," one of his biggest adjustments will be the lack of bathtubs in the United State and said he wanted to learn the "Bernie Lean" dance that was so popular in Oakland last season.

It would take a long time to explain. Just consider it a cultural thing.

Also could be that regardless of the rehab, they aren't interested in extending Garza after the injury and are looking to deal him/act as if he's not a fixture in future rotations.

@JonHeymanCBS: evan gattis, braves prospect, is tearing it up in winter ball. atlanta still eyes a LF, preferably a leadoff type for '13

Looking for a short term LF option who can lead off, probably cheap. I think we can help them out. Surely DeJesus can play LF.
