Does Tom Ricketts have a debilitating cocaine habit or something? Why are we solely picking up scraps?

You know the answer to that. Right or wrong, the Cubs have determined that they need to conserve resources and wait for the farm system to produce tons of talent before they make any sort of major commitments.

Cocaine isn't expensive enough to account for the difference in what they are doing and what they should be doing.

It's gotta be a divorce.

It's starting to feel odd that neither Schierholtz nor Stewart are official yet, and we still have to make a roster move to add both.

We're trying to find a way to fit them into a 70M payroll.

Kyle,

I'm curious - who do you feel came out ahead on the Royals - Rays swap? For the moment, forget what else KC might have gotten in return for those prospects. Who do you feel will get the best value in the trade?

Probably Rays. Six years of sweet pre-FA control on Myers vs. two years of Shields. Myers has some warts, but Shields has some too pitching outside of Tampa and that defense, plus he's a pitcher and all pitchers risky bets.

I don't think they'll get what they hope to get out of Wade Davis, either.

Given your stance on always banking on the sure thing of proven MLB performance over prospects, I was curious.

Way too late for that. Once we fill out the roster, we're basically at $90 million.

You've gotten this really weird idea about my stance on prospects. I think they need to be properly discounted for the high probability that they won't succeed in the majors, but it's a lot more complicated than saying "always bank proven MLB performance."

I guess we're going to have to sell the McDonald's

Shields HAS shown inconsistency, albeit positive inconsistency (3-year fWARs between 2009-2011 of 3.7, 2.0, 4.9), but they traded Myers for someone who is a sure bet ace, and Shields isn't exactly that.

That is one of the most pointless points I've read on here.

Point I was trying to make was that the Royals wanted a consistent ace and paid an ace's ransom. That price should've gotten them a Halladay level ace. Shields was not a befitting return.

Interesting transaction history for Sandy Rosario who the Cubs just claimed off waivers from the Red Sox:

July 2, 2004: Signed by the Florida Marlins as an amateur free agent.

October 17, 2012: Selected off waivers by the Boston Red Sox from the Miami Marlins.

November 28, 2012: Traded by the Boston Red Sox to the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later. The Oakland Athletics sent Graham Godfrey (December 7, 2012) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade.

December 10, 2012: Selected off waivers by the Boston Red Sox from the Oakland Athletics.

December 12, 2012: Selected off waivers by the Chicago Cubs from the Boston Red Sox.

Seems like people keep hoping to sneak him through waivers so they can hold on to him in the minors.

Our 40-man situation is all kinds of weird.

I think that pretty much every team's claimed him by now, so maybe it will work. He has some nice minor league career K rates though.

As for our 40 man, as of now, Clevenger and Campana are the most expendable. Unfortunately, we have Soler, Szczur, and Concepcion occupying spots with no hope of contributing at the big league level this season. There could be a roster clearing trade on the horizon, but I feel that I've been thinking that for weeks.

If you get rid of Clevenger and Campana, you are almost certainly going to have to replace both of them with a catcher and another backup outfielder, unless you think they are going to go with 2 catchers on the 40-man or have Brett Jackson on the MLB roster.

Jackson's exactly what I had in mind if we need an OF. As for an emergency backup catcher, If the need arrises all they have to do is say Koyie Hill's name 3 times and he'll appear in full uniform.

rosario's numbers are weird. his k:bb rates have always been ridiculous (even though he's mostly been too old [or way too old] for his leagues), but it has never tranlated into success as a starter or reliever.

the more guys like this that they add, the better. add as many guys as you can to the bullpen who "could" be good, and then hope we get at least average luck.

You read the scouting reports on Rosario, and it feels like there's a little something there. He's apparently got legitimately mid-90s velocity, adequate offspeed stuff and throws strikes. His problem is that his fastball is very straight and he leaves it up in the zone a lot. Had problems with a quad injury last season.

Only walked two batters in 30 IP between AAA and the majors last season.

I kind of hope we hold on to him. He seems a little more exciting than the rest of the Iowa conga line last season.
