Back on topic, let's just focus our disdain toward the Dodgers

The Dodgers seem determined to sign Greinke no matter the cost, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman asked a Dodgers person about the team's budget, to which the reply was, "What budget?"

Can he ask for something outlandish like 1/300?

That's not a typo.

If only Theo and Jed were trying to win as badly as Brian Sabean, we too could have Angel Pagan for 40 million.

I hope this joke never goes away.

I guess I'll put this here?

@ESPNChiCubs Sounds like will make a move or two. Kind of closing in. Maybe lefty reliever and/or non tendered player from other team.

Sabean loves him some 30-year-old CFers coming off career years.

Sure, Pagan's been a 15 WAR player over the last 4 years and worth about $60 million, but lets [expletive] all over this because arglebargle spending money fire bad something something.

And no, I wasn't hoping for the Cubs to sign him, but I'm not quite sure why we're supposed to mock this as such a horrible deal. Even with him being on the wrong side of 30 I doubt they end up overpaying by much.

I just think its funny he toiled as our 4th/5th OFer for 2 years and several years later is a coveted FA worthy of that kind of deal.

I don't know about anyone else, but my perception of Pagan is still colored by his time with the Cubs. I have to keep reminding myself that he turned out to be a good player.

I don't think it's a horrible deal, but I wouldn't hand out that contract to him.

I actually always kind of liked him and wished he'd have been given more of a shot while he was on the team.

I probably wouldn't have given him 4/40, but if the Cubs had signed him to a 2-3 year deal I would have felt pretty good about it.

I just think Carlos Beltran Jr.

I truly thought that comment about Sabean giving him 4/40 was a joke when I read it. And I thought it was funny, but I never really noticed or evaluated how good/valuable Pagan has been.

Even his time with the Cubs was as a part time player, and a pretty decent one at that. In hindsight, I certainly wouldn't have handed him back to the Mets for next to nothing and replaced him with Reed Johnson, who even then was an injury risk and the promise of Felix Pie.

Dodgers' contract talks with Ryu Hyun-jin slow

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Granted 30 days to sign South Korean left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin, the Los Angeles Dodgers are down to less than six and believe they've made little progress toward a deal.

The Dodgers bid $25.7 million for the rights to negotiate with Ryu Hyun-jin. (AP)

"Not really," general manager Ned Colletti said Monday night. "The pace we're on isn't necessarily a pace to get a deal done. So, we'll see."

Pressed on what the holdup might be, Colletti said, "All I'm going to say is the pace is currently the pace. … We certainly want to sign the player."

Ryu's agent, Scott Boras, said he's "taken the time to meet twice" with the Dodgers.

"As we usually do we've had good meetings," Boras said. "We've yet to receive an offer. When we do we'll hopefully begin discussions."

The Dodgers won the right to negotiate with Ryu with a $25.7 million bid. If the sides do not come to an agreement by 5 p.m. ET Sunday, the bid would be returned to the club.

Meantime, the Dodgers are focused on other starting pitchers. They would like to sign free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke, but have not yet made an offer. Asked if he'd met with Greinke's agent, Casey Close, Monday, Colletti responded, "I saw Casey today," and declined further comment.

In the hopes of signing two starters, the Dodgers also have shown interest in Anibal Sanchez.

Speaking generally of the starting pitching market – only Hiroki Kuroda has signed among the higher-end free agents – Colletti said negotiations have been deliberate.

"They're going to be methodical," he said. "I think everybody is in diligence mode right now."

@Buster_ESPN: Team that's viewed as most desperate for outfield help by rival officials at these meetings: The Phillies.

If we can't get a reasonable valuable return for Soriano and/or DeJesus from someone, to me it suggests that their expectations are a bit high. Unless of course they plan on some type of attempt at going for it in 2013.

Pagan had 318 at bats with the Cubs in his age 25/26 seasons. He went .254/.309/.415 with 16 doubles, 4 triples, 9 homers, and 8 steals. There was no reason at all for us to just give him away.

That was also a much different run environment. When the Cubs got rid of Pagan he was going on 27 years old and had been easily below average in 2 part time seasons. He could've been handled differently, but players in that situation get pushed out all the time, especially guys like Pagan who were never well regarded prospects.
