MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports that the Dodgers are close to a deal with free agent Alexander Guerrero.

Guerrero, a 26-year-old Cuban defector, has been in contact with the Dodgers for several months but an agreement couldn't be finalized until he secured an unblocking license from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Sanchez says the pact is "between five and seven years" and will be worth $32 million. Guerrero is a power-hitting second baseman.

Was this guy being talked about in another thread? I don't recall ever really hearing about him.

can we change the title of this thread to something that makes sense? wtf the dodgers are doing is winning their division by a huge margin and enjoying the second-best record in the major leagues.

Brandon League (the source of the thread title) has a 5.33 ERA and -1.1 fWAR.

Yeah, here. Can't blame you for not being able to find it.

the concern was/is that they spent all that money on what was immediately available, as opposed to being patient and investing in more elite talent that will be good for longer. everybody knew they'd be good this year, but they could have still been very good quickly without having to pick up contracts like beckett and crawford (while giving up 2 great young arms), or a 130 million dollar 1B worth 3 wins

I always forget the standings are based on the fWAR of your most expensive reliever.

God forbid a pro sports team tries to win today.

everybody knew they'd be good this year,

That's not true at all. Lots of people were making fun of the Dodgers for spending and not being good this year.

and literally right after you cut off that quote i explained that i think they could have still been good immediately while taking a better approach that sets them up even better for the future. nobody is criticizing them for spending, even though you want to make it seem like that's the argument here. they spent a ton of money and they have a good team this season. the question is whether or not they'll look back in a few years and think "we're good, but we could be in a lot better shape right now if we had been a little smarter about our spending instead of just immediately going on a shopping spree for what was immediately available at the time"

it's pointless to try and argue it here though, because abuck will just use another variation of that same joke that 3 or 4 posters have been using over and over the last few months.

You guys are so obsessed with picking nits on winning teams that you are perfectly happy to accept the garbage the Cubs have purposefully put on the field.

"picking nits" like laughing about spending 33 million dollars on a below replacement level pitcher. They did the equivalent of the cubs spending spree that got them into all that trouble in the first place, just on a grander scale. It's worked so far for 4/5ths of a season but lets not pretend there's not a pretty good chance they regret some of this [expletive] really soon

The Cubs spending spree did not get them in trouble.

Yeah, this is like judging the Cubs' spending spree right before the 2007 playoffs started. Plenty of time for a lot of what LA has done to go wrong.

Fair point, but the Soriano contract was still pretty bad.

Posted

it wasn't organization crippling by any means.

pretty much every WS champ of the last 10 years had at least one or two or more terrible contracts. the contracts of zambrano and soriano were not why the cubs have sucked recently.

I don't see how we can even compare the two situations. One ownership group paid cash for their team and immediately landed a historic mega deal for their TV rights. The other has a debt load that's possibly the worst in baseball that hampers them even attempting to "buy" a championship. If we had the same ownership the Dodgers do, we'd have a 200+ mill payroll right now, constructed a hell of a lot better than what the Dodgers have.

Yes, one ownership group is good, one is a disgrace.

I don't get why people can never separate criticisms of the Cubs organization from the front office. Why there always has to be this knee jerk, it's not the FOs fault!!! No [expletive], it doesn't make this less of a [expletive].
