From MLBTR:

The Rockies will entertain trade possibilities for multiple position players, including Dexter Fowler and Michael Cuddyer, opposing executives and scouts tell Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post.

How about a deal centered around Garza for Fowler + Matzek. That would open up the possibility of trading Brett Jackson in a package for another pitcher.

Why would anyone give anything of significant value for Jackson at this point?

What? No.

I'd hope for a better prospect than Matzek in return for Garza.

Jackson might interest another team as part of a package deal.

Explain why you think Fowler and Matzek are a good return for Garza.

I have a hard time deciding how much I think Matt Garza is worth in a trade right now.

Matt Garza is entering his age-29 season, is one year removed from a 2.95 FIP and 4.9 fWAR season, will be in his final arbitration year and should net his new team a compensation pick.

Matt Garza is also a sore-armed pitcher who had FIPs of around 4.15 with extreme consistency every other season of his career, including last season. Outside of 2011, he's a 3-win pitcher, and he'll be getting paid like a 2-win pitcher, so the excess value would be about 1 win and a draft pick.

I mean, we might as well gamble at this point that he has an awesome 2012 first half and we get something awesome at the deadline, but if we wanted to trade him this offseason, we aren't going to get much. If we're still setting framing this in terms of what we would have gotten last spring, then I have a feeling we're going to be very disappointed.

I mean, Fowler and Matzek are terrible, of course, so I want no part of that.

Dexter Fowler is awful outside of Coors.

This. Pass on Fowler. And pass on the whole idea in general. If that report about the Cubs looking to add pitchers this offseason is true, they could conceivably add someone like Edwin Jackson and Brandon McCarthy and then all of a sudden we have a 1-4 of Garza, McCarthy, Jackson, Samardzija and it's one of the top rotations in the NL (on paper, at least).

I still think Garza+Vitters for a Package like Olt+Buckel is the way to go. The Rangers don't have any place for Olt to go unless they shift him to 1B where his above average to plus 3B defense is wasted. I just can't see Olt or Andrus being with Texas when the 2013 season starts.

2012 sucked. 2012 really sucked.

2013 might not be "the year," but it doesn't have to suck. Certainly not on the level that 2012 did.

If 2013 is to be sans suckage, Matt Garza will be a big part of it.

Garza no longer has the extra year of team control attached that he did last winter. Couple that with the fact that his season ended with an injury in July, his Winter 2012/2013 value won't be much higher than his Summer 2013 value, so why not keep him and try to win. If that doesn't work out, then shop away.

Unless, of course someone wants to make the type of offer some thought that we could get last winter.

I've wanted Garza dealt as much or more than anyone. But we missed our chance. I guess it's possible we could vet a "Greinke/Angels" type package at the deadline, if he's having a really good year. But I can't see a GM trading for a guy that has had elbow issues two years in a row, including missing the last two and a half months, without seeing him log some innings beforehand. If he's making ten mill+ next year. Which is likely. There's just safer options out there to chooae from. We need to get him healthy and see if he'd take a discount of some sort on a longterm deal. If not, hope he pitches well enough to where we can feel comfortable giving him the big contract or to where we can get as solid of a return as possible. But this offseason? I just can't see a team paying up for a guy that hasn't pitched in quite a while. Too much risk involved for them to give up anything of value, in my opinion.

I think Garza's situation is one that the players union didn't think through completely. Cubs could see how he pitches and if they're not able to get a great package for him, make him the 1 year qualifying offer if he won't take an extension this year. Then repeat until he's traded, signed away for a 1st round pick, or proves ineffective. It's not the most cost efficient way to have a SP, but there's no commitment.

If I'm Texas, no way I pay that much for Garza this offseason.

You've got Greinke, Edwin, Sanchez, Marcum, Haren, Peavy, McCarthy, Dempster, Lohse, Kuroda as FA who all will just cost money, instead of money and prospects. Then you're likely to have Shields or Price, Josh Johnson, Tommy Hanson or another Atlanta guy, one of Oaklands guys, possibly Lester, possibly Cliff Lee, Mastreson, and who knows who else out there for trade. And all those guys are currently pitching. Garza isn't going to net a big offer right now. Hell, he didn't at the deadline. When he was due back any day and there were many less options available to teams.

Right. Garza is damaged goods until he shows he's not. The best time to trade him will be at the trade deadline next season, and that's only if he pitching well.

I really hope they don't extend him.

There's no such thing anymore. Instead, for us to get a comp pick, we need to offer him whatever the qualifying offer is at that point. This year, it's a tad over 13 mill. He has to sign with someone else and that team loses their first rounder(we would NOT receive it) With this being the first year of this, it's going to be interesting to see how many teams are willing to lose their 1st(and the draft allotment that goes with it) Same with how many teams offer it, to try and keep the player, just on a one year(NFL franchise tag) type of commitment.
