Adam Greenberg was on ESPN today. Couldn't hear what they were talking about, but the ticker said something about how there is some "rally" to try to get him one more MLB at bat. My co-workers had no clue who he was, so I had to explain. They replied with "Why didn't he get out of the way? Idiot."

Cubs told Greenberg "No thanks."

Good decision.

Yeah, nice of the Cubs to have a front office that is not into stupid pandering to the fans garbage like this. Old regimes would have not only signed him, but had some stupid on field ceremony for it.

Well, no, they wouldn't.

You mean you don't remember all those times Hendry and Co. brought back ex minor league players who flamed out or had their careers ended due to horrific injuries and let them have one AB then had a ceremony for said players after the game? pfft, talk about revisionist history on your end.

I think Hoyer said it best, you were called up on merit and you appeared in a major league game and are in the register as a Major League player. Begging a team to let you take an AB as a publicity stunt is just stupid and is not going to ultimately be satisfying for you.

IIRC though, Adam Greenberg's callup was quite unexpected (jumping from AA to the majors) and I don't think most people expected him to last very long, as it was a bit of a reactionary move to demote a struggling Patterson and Dubois to Iowa with hopes of getting them back on track. I'm not saying the callup wasn't merited, but his callup less of 'we gotta make space for this kid' and more of 'we need someone to take the place of one of our guys.' Greenberg should just be happy that he made the majors and appeared in a game. Most career minor leaguers would take just being on a major league roster for a day (although I don't think many would be ok with getting beaned in the head and suffering from concussion related symptoms for the next couple of years).

Lost in this story is the fact that, even if he had homered in that PA, Dusty still would have benched him because he was a rookie and needed to learn by never playing.

I remember it more of one of those reward the minor league guy that has no real future to give hope to the other roster filler guys who do everything right but just don't have the talent type moves. That doesn't necessarily contradict anything that you said. Hendry's version of dual fronts.

Ha! That would be funny, assuming he isn't seriously hurt. But what if he gets hit, walks, sac fly, etc? He'd still be without his coveted official AB.

i suspect he'll have the green light on 3-0. i personally would love to see nothing but pitchouts, forcing him to either k intentionally like an idiot or still not get his ab.

Well you guys are a bunch of bitter people. I guess following the Cubs will do that to you, as I haven't watched much the last couple of years. I just saw the story on another forum, and thought I'd check out what everyone thought here. Now I regret it, when I read people wanting him to be hit in the head again or intentionally walked...

yea, jerks. it's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice!

I think some of the cynicism comes from the fact that if you were to look up every sad story of people who deserve one major league at bat you could fill out every teams lineup on October 2nd. Hell, every team for every game left in the season. Countless guys who flamed out in the low minors but were really nice guys or had some story to tell. Guys who never made it out of college or high school ball but went on to save someones life or what have you.

I don't mind him getting the at bat but lets not pretend he did anything incredible to earn it. It says more about the power of the internet and social networking than it does him as a player. I'm not such a purist that I'd say this taints anything, but if you're going to allow crap like this lets go all the way. Select a sympathetic superfan from every team and call it Who Wants To Be A Baseball Player. Put that shizzle on Fox and make the prize an MLB at bat.

What a great PR move by the Marlins!

Hey fans we lied to you about our commitment to be a real team, but here's an at bat for a guy you don't care about that is such a hot prospect he had trouble getting getting at bats for TEAM ISRAEL.

Sadly there are meatheads that well be upset the Cubs didn't do it, ironically the same meatheads who would have thrown a fit when the player that was DFA'd for Greenberg has a hot streak for another team.

you know, there's another player who was HBP in his only major league plate appearance. granted it happened in 1955 and he's currently 75 years old, but i say what the hell, give him a shot too! it's time to right these wrongs!

I mean, I'm not saying I'd want him to have a heart attack in his first major league swing, but man...

I can understand Greenberg wanting to get this chance but why are the Marlins doing this? Is the publicity really worth it? Will this change anyone's perception of who they are as a franchise in a positive way?

If you're the opposing pitcher, do you serve up a fat pitch that he can drive or do you approach him the way you would any other hitter? I can't imagine they'd let Greenberg do this in a game against a contender.

In the spirit of the rules, they shouldn't be allowed to do that.

I believe it was in Miami that him getting hit in the head happened, no? Also it's the [expletive] Marlins they hired Ozzie to be their manager, Loria is their owner and they have a HR celebration statue that makes a disney attraction look toned pretty bland.

He got hit in Florida.

Also, the Marlins with a gimmick? That's so new and different.
