Score callers calling this a junk package are driving me nuts.

Guy just called in calling the return from last night junk and asking if we've gotten anything in these moves the past several years (completely ignoring the fact that this is an entirely different regime), aside from Chris Archer (who he really wishes we had back)...

Hanley basically replies, "Uh... no, I guess not. Jury is still out on Travis Wood."

Mully goes "Well ya got Garza... didn't give up much of anything for him," (which is also funny because he totally didn't realize that the guy the caller mentioned was given up in the Garza trade).

The Score update guys are just referring to Vizcaino as a minor league pitcher coming off Tommy John.

This is 5-10 min after after Goldstein was on and spoke really highly of the return on both these trades.

People are stupid.

And this is why I stopped listening to sports radio years ago. You get a few nuggets here and there, but it's mostly a forum for knuckledraggers and mouthbreathers.

Can anyone help me out with the pronunciation of Arodys. In my head I have always said "a row deece" but I am sure that is way wrong.

I once traded Paul Konerko on an expiring contract for Vizcaino in a Diamond Mind league.

i'm gonna go with a-rod-deez

and since everybody hates Keith Dumb Bunny, Piliere had him #21, Sickels had him #32, BA had him #40

it's also really odd how everybody's turning up their nose at likely bullpen prospects, as if we have no use for those

You call it turning up their nose, I call it realistic descriptions of what we got. Sure we can use such things. But they aren't exactly tough to find. And there's no cause for celebration once you get them.

The celebration is because while it may be realistic to think they'll both be bullpen arms, one could potentially be a legit #2 SP. And from reports that I've read, I don't think anybody would be surprised if Vizcaino wound up starting.

So did the Cubs really pick up the tab for Maholm's option next year? I thought I read something about that last night.

I was thinking the opposite. The Cubs would kick in money to pay for this year, but it sounded like the Braves would be paying his salary next year. I believe it was a quote from Wren, but I've read so many things the past 12 hours that I don't recall exactly.

People with Vizcaino's ability are very difficult to find. Durability may force him to a pen role, but he could still provide plenty of value as a shutdown reliever. To receive him in exchange for 1.5 years of Paul Maholm is a very good deal. I'm not going to jump up and down over Chapman and Brigham, but they appear to be decent middle relief candidates in exchange for two guys who were seemingly gone after this season and weren't providing much value at the moment is a fair deal to me.

I was referring to the 2 other guys as bullpen arms. I didn't realize anybody talked about Vizcaino as a reliever.

My favorite gems from the Cubs facebook page:

Nice win ! But really Cubs Reed Johnson and Soto Gone and Malholm get real Castro should go !!! Good Luck to Johnson and Soto !
Ron, not only were they worthless but stupid because Maholm, Reed and the rest of the are guys young enough to build on. I can understand getting what you can for Geo and maybe Soriano because of his contract, but why trade these guys while they are hitting their stride? You can still get a couple more good years out of Dempster, who will probably be gone tomorrow. Garza is also good for the future. With this rebuilding situation going better than planned there is no reason to trade anyone. I believe may last three ex's took epstein and hoyer at gun point and made these moves.
And yet you trade three good major league players for three no bodies. What happened to building a team? The people they traded for aren't even worth the money they are getting paid. Try picking up people that are worth trading for.

He's had questions about his durability even before the TJS. There's still plenty of time to try him as a starter, but it wouldn't be shocking if he were turned into a reliever at some point. And with his stuff and command, he'd project to be a completely dominating reliever.

This one went completely over my head. How does Arodys Vizcaino = Keith Dumb Bunny?

Posted (edited)

Well the two other bullpen arms were essentially for Johnson and Soto. I don't think anyone is jumping up and down over Chapman/Brigham (and now, apparently a PTBNL) for Soto/Johnson. I think most people feel that's a pretty even swap.

But, as TT just pointed out, some people think Vizcaino could wind up in the bullpen based on durability issues. However, whether a shutdown reliever or TOR starter, it's still a great deal for Maholm.

ETA: Kyle, as well

I believe that was a Keith Law comment.

our bullpen FIP is 4.65 and has been below-replacement; good relievers are hard enough to find

There's definitely a lot of stupid going on in those comments. It's nice to see a few people on there though that actually get it. Unfortunately, they are outnumbered by the "OMG you can't trade reed he hustles and is awesome!" people.

In a year when they didn't even try to find relievers that's not a big deal. They traded away 2 of their best relievers for more useful parts and another one retired. They didn't care, because those are replaceable parts.

geez, garrett evans, just come out and say you want a team of beautiful pure snow white aryans.

He wanted to keep Garza and only wanted Soriano gone for contract reasons. I think it's more about him thinking this team was better than it is and about to go on a run.
